Sinossi

"Victor Wayne and Shirley Siegal are 14 year old Von Steuben high school freshmen, living in the predominately Jewish neighborhood of Chicago’s Albany Park, in 1945. Follow the twists and turns of their lives in the 1940’s, 50’s and into the 90’s as they take you through the familiar Chicago and Florida locations.
Though “Albany Park” is a work of fiction, it is based on many actual events as it describes lifestyles of the characters and the era."

L'autore

Myles (Mickey) Golde is a lifelong resident of Chicago and the city's northern suburbs. A graduate of the public school system, he went on to receive a JD from the John Marshall Law School in 1955. Following two years in the Army and a short stint as an attorney, Mr. Golde went into the sanitary maintenance business with his brother. In 1998 they sold their company OSS Inc. the largest Food Plant Sanitation Contractor in the Midwest to Omni Inc. a national service contractor. Mickey and Nancy, his wife of fifty nine years, reside in Highland Park, Illinois and Boca Raton, Florida. They have three children, Bradley, Michael and Leslie, and three grandchildren, Quinn, Lilia and Lucy Belle. Prior to writing Albany Park, Mr. Golde wrote many human interest stories for the Lerner Papers of Chicago and other local publications.

Well, I found the book entitled "Albany Park" most intersting since I grew up in Albany Park just a few years later than the book describes. It was like going home with all the mentions of various high school hangouts, my high school, and local restaurants, etc. Something like film noir. I'm only 1/2 way through so this review is limited. I'm not sure that if you didn't live there you'd be able to see it in the same light as I.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were very well developed as was the story.
Interesting twists and turns with everything coming together at the end. Also, gives a
great taste of Chicago several decades ago. Thanks for having a great memory, Mickey.
I am (not so) patiently awaiting your next book.

I never leave negative reviews on books. My thoughts are that everyone has their own likes/dislikes in reading. But this book was so horrible I just had to warn others about it.
I was born and raised in Albany Park (50's, 60's, 70's). In fact, I lived on Albany Avenue.
There was very little reference to Albany Park as it's defined in Chicago city parameters. A better title might have been 'North Side of Chicago'. There were references to a few of the familiar streets and establishments, but most were not in Albany Park.
Furthermore, the writing was horrible and difficult to read. English teachers would be sick if they read this book. I can't even count how many words were spelled incorrectly, and the punctuation errors were horrendous.
I can understand a few typos in a book, but this one was rife with errors.
One example (I'm paraphrasing here) 'He loved her with his heart and sole'. Really? He loved her with the bottom of his foot?
Finally, almost every character had an awful habit of 'licking their lips'. It was grossing me out, but every two or three pages someone would be 'licking their lips'.
I definitely do NOT recommend this book for anyone.

It's not great fiction, Phllip Roth is not threatened--he wrote about a similar neighborhood in the same era in New Jersey--but it does capture the flavor of an upward mobile middle class Jewish community. I was sold when the author, the model for the protagonist?--mentioned the bookie joint/cigar store on Kedzie, the Purity near the Kimball el, and the plastic slip covers in a Hollywood park apartment. Unfortunately, not much discussion of Von Steuben (now a science magnet school), or the grade schools (Hibbard, Volta?) and of course nothing of the transformation of Albany Park into a really diverse place. Hibbard has a website, Ithink they have kids from fifty plus different countries. Worth buying for nostalgia if you were there at that time, I'm buying a copy for a cousin. The section on Florida is not very good. There were Jewish gangsters, most drive Cadillacs, but it is mostly a distraction from Albany Park itself (I also gather the author never set foot in the AP branch library).
