"Victor Wayne and Shirley Siegal are 14 year old Von Steuben high school freshmen, living in the predominately Jewish neighborhood of Chicago’s Albany Park, in 1945. Follow the twists and turns of their lives in the 1940’s, 50’s and into the 90’s as they take you through the familiar Chicago and Florida locations.
Though “Albany Park” is a work of fiction, it is based on many actual events as it describes lifestyles of the characters and the era."

Myles (Mickey) Golde is a lifelong resident of Chicago and the city's northern suburbs. A graduate of the public school system, he went on to receive a JD from the John Marshall Law School in 1955. Following two years in the Army and a short stint as an attorney, Mr. Golde went into the sanitary maintenance business with his brother. In 1998 they sold their company OSS Inc. the largest Food Plant Sanitation Contractor in the Midwest to Omni Inc. a national service contractor. Mickey and Nancy, his wife of fifty nine years, reside in Highland Park, Illinois and Boca Raton, Florida. They have three children, Bradley, Michael and Leslie, and three grandchildren, Quinn, Lilia and Lucy Belle. Prior to writing Albany Park, Mr. Golde wrote many human interest stories for the Lerner Papers of Chicago and other local publications.

Well, I found the book entitled "Albany Park" most intersting since I grew up in Albany Park just a few years later than the book describes. It was like going home with all the mentions of various high school hangouts, my high school, and local restaurants, etc. Something like film noir. I'm only 1/2 way through so this review is limited. I'm not sure that if you didn't live there you'd be able to see it in the same light as I.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were very well developed as was the story.
Interesting twists and turns with everything coming together at the end. Also, gives a
great taste of Chicago several decades ago. Thanks for having a great memory, Mickey.
I am (not so) patiently awaiting your next book.

Yes, well like everyone who posted/and or read this book, I grew up in Albany Park. When the book opens on VJ day in August, 1945 I was 9 years old, awaiting my 10th birthday in Nov. And I was (here's another book title) Hudson Lake, Indiana. My mother was in South Bend, Indiana that day and she reported that South Bend was in the streets.

As others have explained, when the book opens, the central characters are (I'm guessing here) around 14 and are freshmen at Von Steuben HS (I attended Roosevelt).

Victor Wayne and Shirley Siegel are on again/off again friends/strangers/lovers. Mickey uses a clever literary device to move the story by juxtaposing Victor's and Shirley's lives as they move on from HS and adolescence into adulthood and middle age. Both are successful but in different ways.

Although the book is entitled, ALBANY PARK, the story does not stay, i.e., this is not a story about Albany Park, but is about the characters who start their lives in the neighborhood and go on from there. As another poster noted, the book has, sex, pols, gangsters, corrupt union bosses - hmm, did I miss anyone?

Where Mickey really succeeds in that he traces the migration of a segment of the Chicago Jewish Community from the West Side in the '20's and '30's into Albany Park in the '30's, '40's and '50's and thence into the Northern Suburbs. Some, however became snowbirds and moved on to Florida.

I, however moved on to California.

The details were good the story kept my interest. Why don't those who self publish check more carefully for spelling errors?
