This book is for any person who wishes to have clearer functioning of his or her mind and not to be bogged down with useless thinking. Within three weeks the result will be more control over thoughts, better concentration, more energy, more joy, happiness and appreciation for life. This is a simple and straightforward self-help book approached from two different and yet related perspectives.
The first is about correcting breathing volume using a physician-developed programme known as the Buteyko Breathing Method. Chronic overbreathing is a habit present with any person who experiences stress, anxiety, panic attacks and depression. It causes both a constriction of blood vessels and reduced delivery of oxygen to tissues and organs, most notably the brain. The Buteyko Method is a simple approach that significantly improves oxygenation of the brain, resulting in far less brain cell excitability.
The second aspect deals with recognising the activity of the mind, the nature of thought and how to step out of thought. This too is essential to understanding your mind and taking control.
The mind is regarded as the most important capability of the human species. Yet, most people have little control over it as it races from thought to thought. Mind activity, stress, depression and anxiety are nothing more than the absence of control. How much control do you have over your mind? For how long can you choose to stop thinking?
A quiet mind is one that you have control over. Quite simply, you can choose to think or not to think. You don't get lost in trains of useless thinking. Most of the time, you know what is taking place. Without control over our minds, we have nothing. It is the one part of us that determines our quality of life on earth, yet it receives little attention from our educational, religious and medical institutions. How insane is that?
If only you had a chance to look inside people's minds, you would see the same turmoil that goes on in your own head. Hidden behind the nice white smile is fear of the future and regrets from the past. A racing and repetitive mind is just below the surface. It might not have reached the depths that someone in depression has reached, but at the same time, you will see common traits. In fact, all of us are just a few stressful events away from mental problems. Cumulative stressful events take their toll on everybody unless, of course, we have some understanding of thought processes and can better oxygenate our brain.
In our sophisticated Western world with its emphasis on intelligence and the stigma on mental problems, normal healthy people who go through periods of being down or depressed have few outlets through which to seek help. Addressing this deficit early on is the key to reversing it.
My interest in this area stems from having both asthma and a racing mind for many years. By using the Buteyko Method to reverse my asthma and by improving my awareness, I also addressed my racing mind. Thousands have attended my courses in Ireland and abroad for asthma and other conditions. Those who have attended for panic attacks, depression, stress and anxiety have reported very good feedback; hence, this book.
This book can be read by someone with poor concentration, or a clouded and depressed mind. It contains nothing complicated and through constant repetition, the reader can apply the guidance provided here to his or her own life. The result is lightness and a major lift in mood.

The book is an excellent description of how to apply the Buteyko Method and mindfulness for anxiety and a worrying mind. Written with simple language in larger text and supported by high quality illustrations.
My goal was to identify with the reader who is at the mercy of their own mind resulting in constant thinking, worrying, poor energy levels and concentration.

I have suffered from anxiety and panic attacks for nearly 40 years. I have been alternately diagnosed with anxiety, panic attacks, adrenal fatigue, hypothyroidism, post-traumatic stress syndrome, and I have been told "it's all in your head." I have consulted more doctors than I can count. I have tried acupuncture, herbal medicines, and relaxation techniques, all with little or no success. I still have periodic anxiety attacks and I had nearly constant palpitations, a racing heart or irregular heartbeat.
When I came across Patrick McKeown's book I thought it didn't apply to me because I was not "over-breathing." I ordered it anyway, and it was an eye opener. I realized that the cause of most of my problems was indeed over-breathing, something that no doctor had ever checked.
I started the program immediately and followed the instructions in the book to the letter. It was miraculous. The day after I had started I was able to sleep the whole night without palpitations and they are subsiding throughout the day also.
I still have a long way to go in stabilizing my breathing completely but I am making progress day by day. For the first time ever, I was able to stop an anxiety without medication, simply by doing "many short breath holds" - an exercise explained in the book.
The book not only teaches in detail the Buteyko method (which others try to sell for much higher prices!) but also gives valuable advice about life style changes, stress management and how to take control of one's thoughts.
I recommend this book to anyone with breathing problems, with anxiety and panic attacks and especially with asthma. In fact, I believe it should be read by everyone who wants to reduce stress and calm the mind
Patrick McKeown is not only a great author, he is also a very special person. Unlike other authors, he is personally available to his customers with advice and unstinting support.
Along with the book, I also recommend Patrick's DVD. They have helped me greatly in following along with the exercises.

I stumbled across the Buteyko method a while ago online, and although I do not have asthma, I found out that it worked for anxiety, too. I bought Patrick's book, and when I received the book, I sort of forgot about the CD which came with the book. I thought that it just showed how to do the reduced breathing technique. Then as I read the book, it mentioned the CD, and thought I should check it out. It turned out, it was for relaxation and the reduced breathing exercise. Because of my anxiety issue, I had accumulated with a dozen or more of "relaxation" CDs, and I'd checked out many more that I ended up not buying after listening to the samples.

The CD that Patrick created is the best that I've heard so far. His voice and the way he speaks are without any kind of mannerism - just straight, simple, and warm, himself. I have been a musician for many years, and music on relaxation CDs can be very hard for me to deal with, as it is often more destructive than soothing. The background music on this CD is very simple and beautiful at the same time. Very simple piano music without any over-emotional tone. Later on, you notice drone sound by either the keys or violin, which is also without any "New Age-tone." I listen to this CD 3-4 times a day now, as it really works for me to start to relax, and calm my breathing completely. Besides the breathing technique, the latter part of the book that talks about anxiety and mindfulness is very helpful in terms of how to step out of your repetitive thinking. It makes me want to read over and over again.

I'm only at the beginning of week 2 at this, but I want to recommend this book and the CD to anyone who wants to learn to relax, step out of your thinking, and learn to breathe more effectively.

I know Pat Mckeown to be an extremely enlightened and open human being. What I like about this book is that he brings all his wisdom, experience and medical expertise under one roof to produce a spiritual and medical masterpiece.I recommend that not only should people read this book but also keep it as a reference for abundant and successful living

As a chronic anxiety/panic sufferer for many years, I am always looking for answers and causes to this dreaded emotional disorder. After reading this incredible book, I have gained much insight into the "whys" of these unwanted bodily sensations. It is simply amazing what changes can be accomplished by just bringing attention to your breathing. Patrick McKeown had done an incredible job of describing and offering simple solutions to acute or general anxiety. I never thought of myself as an over breather, but after completing the exercises layed out in his book, I can definitely say that my pre-buteyko breathing patterns were causing me chronic hyperventilation. My overly taunt diaphram was causing excessive tension all over my body. I just wished I had learned these methods years ago. I could have saved myself much agony. A definite "must" read for anyone suffering with anxiety. Five Stars !!!!!

This book is the best book I have ever read about how to breath, stop anxiety, live a better life, live in the present and much more. I Totally recommend this book for any one who want to improve their life in any way. It is really good. Since I read this book and apply the ideas in it I can control my life in every way better than before.
