Alwyne and Derek Richardson are a Virginia Beach, Virginia couple with a severe case of wanderlust - and retirement has given them the time to attempt to cure it. Derek was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1939 and immigrated to the US in 1948. He graduated from the SUNY Maritime College in 1961 and sailed for three years as Third Mate on merchant ships (freighters). After leaving the maritime industry, he eventually entered the world of computers and retired as a Systems Analyst in 2001. Alwyne was born in 1943 on Long Island, NY. She graduated from Marietta College in Ohio in 1965, and before and after raising three children also worked in the computer field. They met on the job in 1988, and in 1994 traveled to Glyfada, Greece and were married. That same year they moved to Virginia where they are visited often by their 5 children and 7 grandchildren. After retiring in 2001they embarked on a remarkable 88-day around the world trip on a German container ship. Since then they have been on safari in Africa, and are planning a circumnavigation of South America next.

As an experienced freighter traveler I can attest to the atmosphere described in this book. How lucky the Richardson's were to have made that long trip on such a 'happy' ship. Reading about their trip made me want to rush out and book passage again immediately! One of the things I particularly liked about this book was the combination of descriptions of life on board and experiences ashore at the various ports of call. So many authors who write books about their experiences on board (usually their first) freighter do a very cursory description of their quarters and the ship and the crew and then the book just becomes just another travelogue of all the places visited. While there is a place for such books, for those of us who do not have to be convinced of the merits of freighter travel, this book achieved the perfect balance. It appealed to me as someone who believes that getting there is much more than half the fun! Highly recommended for anyone contemplating their first freighter trip....or their 12th! Good vicarious fun, and the Richardson's sound like the kind of fellow passengers one longs for!
