Margaret McGaffey Fisk is a born storyteller whose tales often cross genres and worlds to bring the events and characters to life. She currently writes romance, science fiction, and fantasy but will go wherever the story takes her.
A daughter of diplomats, her early years were filled with many cultures, both very much alive and long turned to dust, and people who both pondered the great thoughts and were grand pranksters. Whether from wild adventures into the desert to climb sand mountains, poking around little known archaeological sites, or visiting bazaars and inner cities, she came out of that time with a love of culture and an all too sharp awareness of culture clash.
She lives in a Nevada desertscape with her husband, and a rotating collection of cats and sons. When not exercising her creative muscles, she has been known to tame the relatives of beasts in the wild--feral cats. In a different time, you'd find her before a bonfire or with a mug of ale and a lute spinning tales for all who are in earshot. Now, though, you can read her explorations of loyalty, love, and conflict wherever you might be.

Passion is what wins it for me. No! Not that kind of passion! I mean the passion this young girl had pursued since she was small. But, now that she was to be presented as a woman... She wants to dance, something frowned upon back in those days.
Dawn Hyde, narrator of the Audible version of the book made this book so beautiful! Her accents and voice changes helped keep the characters separated and unique. I look forward to reading more with her voice.
Okay, for the romanticohics, there is romance in the end, but most of it is this girl coming of age and her trying to live out her passions, somehow. It makes me sad to know women of the past weren't encouraged to follow their hearts and passions. When I start feeling like we've made no forward motion in the feminist movement, reading something like this shows we have made some progress.
I am looking forward to more by Margaret McGaffey Fisk!
Our heroine, Daphne, starts out as the fairly standard sheltered rich girl, but soon stretches her wings and learns both how sheltered her life really has been, and that life out there isn't as easy as you might think it is! She matures noticeably in the pages of the book.
Her gallant love Jasper, who starts out not being quite so gallant, has somewhat the opposite problem. He feels he knows/has does everything and is really just hanging about because it's expected of him. He learns that he's not quite as all knowing as he thinks he is.
It's a romance so of course there is a happy ending, but the twists and turns that take you there are definitely worth the read and the bevy of other characters are each richly presented and develop recognizable personalities despite some only showing up for a few pages here and there.
Definitely worth the read.
She catches the eye of Jasper Pendleton, a man of money but no significant title, which his mother has decided he will gain by marriage. He has no desire to be shackled to a society flower, yet he can't help but think of the advantages, like getting his mother silenced while continuing his current lifestyle. Past mistresses aside, Jasper is determined to unveil the masked dancer and make her his own. She has other plans.
This tale has many twists and turns that ramp up the tension in believable ways. A regency romance to remember.
