Sinossi

Sharks, sex, and science; Bird of Passage is based on the author’s first expedition into the blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean to track sharks. Calvin Landry, a local artist, signs on as the ship’s mechanic and becomes deathly seasick before the boat leaves sight of land, however he soon finds a new enchanting world awaits him. The story intertwines high seas adventure, self discovery, romance and his life with the colorful characters of Woods Hole. A heart felt tale of the men and women of science who love and work the sea.

I put off a few chores in order to whip through this novel in two days because I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. What a great mix of high-seas adventure, romance and humor. It was fascinating to learn about shark tracking and the science of warm-blooded fish. The characters on the boat made you feel part of a lucky crew that got to spend time with a fearless captain. Each leg of the trip meant swapping out half the crew so although they were still tracking sharks, the newcomers changed the dynamics on board often to hilarious effect. As the pressure to get data mounts and the weather and elements refuse to cooperate, Kevin King builds the story to a tightly choreographed climax of harpoon rifles, menacing sea creatures, and daring ocean rescues. This is all against a backdrop of burgeoning romance so there's something for everyone. When they make the movie (it's perfect for the big screen), I'm thinking Viggo Mortenson as Captain Frank. Two thumbs up!

This is a great book, its very informational if you like sharks and are interested in learning about what shark research was a few years ago.
There is a lot more too, a pretty cool story to go along with the learning.
Both my husband and I worked at WHOI too in the same era, so we knew many of the characters in the book, the author changed the names of some of them.
So Im not going to say any more, dont want to give away too much of the story, except for one thing,,,,,,,and that is to go ahead and read it, you certainly will enjoy it.
We sure did.
Im saving it for our grandkids to read.
