Italian culture experiences a period of transition across the four short narratives that comprise Boccaccio 70. Renzo and Luciana (directed by Mario Monicelli) chronicles the plight of a loving couple who work in the same factory but have to hide their marriage because of work regulations forbidding interaction amongst factory employees. Its dramatic sincerity contrasts starkly with the extravagance of The Temptation of Doctor Antonio. Federico Fellini's first work in colour paints a phantasmagoric picture of the impact of mass-media consumerism on traditional values. This conflict is played out by the censorious Dr. Antonio (Peppino de Filippo) and his mighty opponent: a giant Anita Ekberg (La Dolce Vita) who teases her observers while stretched across a wide billboard.
Luchino Visconti s The Job features Romy Schneider (Les Choses de la Vie) as an aristocratic housewife. Humiliated by a lurid sex scandal involving her husband (Tomás Milián), she threatens to renounce her life of privilege by taking up a job and start working for a living. Vittorio De Sica's The Raffle is a comedy set in the working class world of carnival workers. Zoe, played by Sophia Loren (who had won an Oscar for De Sica s Two Women), is driven by familial obligations and love for a bullfighter to literally offer herself as a prize to be won at a raffle.
Seen together, these four miniatures offer a unique portrait of Italy during its economic miracle. This undertaking by iconic producer Carlo Ponti (La Strada, Lola) is more than an unprecedented gathering of singular talents; it's one of the greatest depictions of the diversity of Italian society.

"renzo e luciana" - luciana, per una clausola del suo contratto di lavoro deve tenere segreto a tutti il suo matrimonio con renzo, che lavora nella stessa azienda. un giorno pero' vengono scoperti dal loro capoufficio che li licenzia. con le liquidazioni riescono ad affittare un appartamento e riusciranno anche a stare insieme tutto il giorno, senza dover piu' lavorare in orari diversi. "le tentazioni del dottor antonio" - il dottor antonio, che vede il male ovunque, viene sconvolto da un cartellone pubblicitario. la donna ritratta lo ossessiona a tal punto che egli credera' di averla viva davanti a se'. antonio segue questo fantasma, docile, allucinato fino a perdere la ragione. "il lavoro" - un conte viene coinvolto in uno scandalo; ma la reazione della moglie e' singolarissima. per il futuro, la contessa vorra' essere retribuita tutte le volte che effettuera' i suoi doveri di moglie. "la riffa" - zoe organizza ogni settimana una speciale "riffa": il vincitore avra' diritto alla sua compagnia. il vincitore e' questa volta il sacrestano che dovra' pero' lasciare il suo posto ad un piu' aitante giovanotto di cui zoe si e' innamorata.

A great sampling of Italian cinema and show why it is fun,

Boccaccio '70 is an Italian film that is made up of four parts, each being directed by a different person. Mario Monicelli, Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti and Vittorio de Sica direct the four shorts. The only thing they have in common is they deal with love and life. Furthermore, they each have an unforgettable woman that is beautiful and enchanting. The four parts addd up to be a great sampling of Italian cinema and show why it is fun.The first story shows us how ridiculous life can be. A woman working at an office is forbidden to be married or even have a boy friend, so she must secretly marry the man she loves. Keeping her secret from her boss isn't so easy and is quite funny. Next, a man that goes out of his way to uphold morality and force women to cover up is faced with a provocative giant-size advertisement. He finds the woman on the billboard, which encourages people to drink milk, too stimulating. He becomes just as obsessed with the woman on the billboard as he does with his quest to cover it up. The third part is probably the most somber. A wealthy count is exposed in the press using the services of expensive call girls. His beautiful wife is faced with this trying situation and professes to find work so that she can make her own money. But living a pampered life, her options are limited. The final story stars Sophia Loren as a carnival worker who schemes a way to make some fast money to pay her bills. She ends up selling tickets to a lottery in which she is the prize for one night. The guy courting her isn't too happy when he finds out and the winner is so timid he hardly knows what to do. Although all of the stories are entertaining, my favorite one is the fantasy about the giant woman. It is fortunate that these shorts were assembled into this package because as stand alone films they probably would not have been as marketable and remained unknown. Boccaccio '70 makes an enjoyable introduction to Italian cinema.
