Recensione

From the book reviews:

“The book is organized so that it may be viewed as a collection of eight lectures. I think this is a good way to approach the book. … the book does a nice job of delivering on its main objectives and I recommend it to anyone who desires to know more about the practice and the potential of business analytics.” (Mark A. McComb, Technometrics, Vol. 54 (4), November, 2012)

Dalla quarta di copertina

The practice of business is changing. More and more companies are amassing larger and larger amounts of data, and storing them in bigger and bigger data bases. Consequently, successful applications of data-driven decision making are plentiful and increasing on a daily basis. This book will motivate the need for data and data-driven solutions, using real data from real business scenarios. It will allow managers to better interact with personnel specializing in analytics by exposing managers and decision makers to the key ideas and concepts of data-driven decision making.

Business Analytics for Managers conveys ideas and concepts from both statistics and data mining with the goal of extracting knowledge from real business data and actionable insight for managers. Throughout, emphasis placed on conveying data-driven thinking.  While the ideas discussed in this book can be implemented using many different software solutions from many different vendors, it also provides a quick-start to one of the most powerful software solutions available.

The main goals of this book are as follows:

·         To excite managers and decision makers about the potential that resides in data and the value that data analytics can add to business processes.

·         To provide managers with a basic understanding of the main concepts of data analytics and a common language to convey data-driven decision problems so they can better communicate with personnel specializing in data mining or statistics.

HASH(0xb21056e4) su 5 stelle Excellent book on creating predictive data models 30 aprile 2012
Di J. Story - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile
In business, it can be vital to able to anticipate what will happen in the future. Jank's book takes you through the process of developing data models that make this possible. These models range from the most simple to the complex.

Although creating these models requires the use of statistics, Jank does a good job of making the subject understandable to the layman. He resists excess use of jargon, and I found the book easy to read. This does not in the least mean that the book is a fluff piece. It is easy to follow, but it walks through a statistical minefield, and so must be read closely.

My only critique is that a little more eye candy would probably make the book appeal to a larger audience.

An excellent overview of the main techniques, procedures, and the rational for using each technique. Different techniques are applied to the same set of examples which add insight. I am adopting this book as one of the textx for my BA class.

if you are looking at the page for this textbook, i would imagine you are taking some sort of data analytics class. hopefully your professor didn't assign this book. it is purely a statistics manual and does not actually teach R. the book presents a graph and says "do this in R" and leaves you with no code examples or solutions for the actual R code required
