At first I was disappointed by this disc, as the first six cuts are of chants. What did I expect - the title after all is "Chants of the Russian Orthodox Church." I had purchased it because I was attracted to the composer, Pavel Chesnokov, who had written many inspiring vocal arrangements for male choirs. A translation of his "Salvation is Created" is a popular number sung in many schools. Also, the choir "Valaam" is just terrific. There are just 16 singers, so they are crisp and precise in their singing; Vadimir Miller, the bass soloist, is as good as any operatic bass I've heard. However, as chants go, these are dandy, but they're chants. Asking for blessings on Nicholas and Alexandra doesn't exactly inspire. I was considering donating the disc to the Salvation Army. Lucky for me, I sat still and listened until we got to the last cut, number seven on this disc, "Many Years." In short, it's the kind of thing you want to hear over and over, with the volume turned up. I'm not often inspired, but this brought tears to my eyes. I give the disc five stars based on this single number.
Vladimir Miller performances rate attention and fill listeners with joy 22 marzo 2013

I heard Miller in concert in St. Petersburg last summer, fourth row center and he sang for most of the 2-1/2 hour concert. Only later did I realize his well-earned worldwide renown. This Chesnokov CD often fills my mornings with delight. Even better, 3 Bassi Profundi, a performance of classical, liturgical, and folk music in which, compared with Vladimir Miller, the other two second bassi sound like counter-tenors.
