Sinossi

As a child in Kathmandu, Asha was poisoned by a dragon and gained the ability to hear the souls of all living things. Decades later in India, she uses her strange gift and her training as an herbalist to care for people possessed by ghosts, poisoned by legendary beasts, and tortured by the cruel doctors of Ming. But when she journeys into the west, Asha discovers that there are fates worse than death and there are human monsters that can only be defeated by a woman with the strength of a dragon.

The Dragon and the Lotus is a part of The Other Earth series. The story spans several years and ends shortly after the end of the Halcyon Trilogy.

I do love this book. It's different from the other books I've read by this author. The pacing is a bit slower, but I really enjoy that. If gives the reader time in this exotic world that is brought to life through wonderful descriptions and interesting characters.

The world presented is one that feels familiar and yet at the same time not. It's more than just being set on the other side of the Earth. Smoothly planted details emerge that tie it into the author's Other Earth Series.

Honestly a very interesting story. It's easy to read it too quickly, but it's also easy to read again.

5.0 su 5 stelle An immersive read in a fascinating world 22 ottobre 2011

The Dragon and the Lotus is a tasty mix of historical fiction and fantasy, with just a touch of steampunk for flavor. I started reading it sort of idly on my lunch break, thinking it would be a pleasant way to pass the time. In reality, I spent the rest of the afternoon counting the minutes until I could go home and finish it. Each adventure the main characters get tangled up in is unexpected and well-balanced, set in a world so rich that I was continuously and pleasantly surprised by each new turn of events.

A fast, entrancing read that definitely left me hoping for more.

Throw your history book out the window, because Joseph Robert Lewis has rewritten it with fantastical magic and superb prose!

Asha, the kick ass heroine!
In this book we meet the most awesome character, Asha, sort of like Cain from the TV show Kung Fu but only if he were tougher, still in the Orient and a chick! We meet Asha as she wanders through the land, helping those she can, but seemingly directionless in her wanderings. She comes upon a sort of Buddhist nun, asleep in and literally enmeshed with the secluded forest around her. When she frees the nun, Asha gains a traveling companion and an interesting counter point to her dark and brooding nature.

As we learn more about Asha and her past, we realize she's traveling with a purpose, to avenge herself on the evil man who calls himself a healer but is little more than a mad scientist spreading destruction and death in his wake.

The World As We Know It
I adored the world building in this book! Starting off with the premise of Earth and then taking a sort of alternate reality view of it, Joseph Robert Lewis crafts a world unlike one I've ever read. Part mythology, part fantasy, with even a hint of Steampunk, the Other Earth saga is set in a richly conceived and lushly described landscape. I loved the allusions, in both name and story, that Lewis weaves into Asha's story and those of the people she meets. With hints of Homer's Odyssey and the Bhagavad Gita juxtaposed against early technology and elements of fantasy, Lewis makes this unusual mix work. It's ornate and absolutely fascinating.

First Things Last
My only complaint is that I picked this series up near the end. While this book does stand on it's own, I'm the sort of reader who enjoys knowing all the back history and to do that, I really would have needed to the previous six books. It's a great introduction to the world, but for those, like me, who enjoy following the linear arc of a storyline, you may prefer to do yourself the favor of starting with The Burning Sky, Book One of the Halcyon Series, the first of three series in the Other Earth saga.

Bottom Line
Amazing fantasy and historical fiction rolled up into one, The Dragon and the Lotus is a treat not to be missed!

I haven't ever read anything else from this author before but I will probably will now. I really enjoyed how the author took our world from back when and changed just enough to essentially create a whole new world. I really enjoyed the characters and thought this book read as more of a classic fable then a novel. As someone who loves mythologies and fables I really enjoyed this read and am looking forward to the next book I read from him.

This is the first book I have read from this author and I have to say I am very impressed by it. The characters, Asha ( a herbalist with special abilities)and Priya ( a blind nun full of wisdom and compassion), are very life-like and strong each in their own special way. Together they go through many adventures as they travel across the world, healing those in need in the way . Towards the end of the book things become more complicated as danger increases with the appearance of new characters such as Gideon and Nadira, and Asha and Priya take on a journey for far more dangerous missions to save the world. I would really like to read more of this series as it always kept me interested and eager to read more!!
