As the wife of a traveling minister in the American west and beyond during the Great Depression that began in 1929 13 gennaio 2015
Di Carolyn Parker - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Clear, crisp memoir of a woman's life journey from sheep wagon to parsonage to classroom. As the wife of a traveling minister in the American west and beyond during the Great Depression that began in 1929, Jessie taught school, raised a family and was a devoted preacher's wife for 50 years. Her memoir wraps the reader in a world completely different from ours today, tugging at our heartstrings as we connect to the difficult challenges in that era, showing us that strong, resourceful individuals make for strong community. Jessie's stories of survival during horrendous economic times as a child and multiple moves to new parishes as a preacher's wife caution the reader not to forget that we must all work together for success, and, even, survival. I loved her candor, her clear sense of purpose in this life, revealed in every page of the book. The black and white family photographs reveal a stoicism reflecting the times. Depression lifestyle tidbits abound, like using a galvanized wash tub to can a sack of corn given to her husband by a farmer. Jessie's strong Christian spirit and can-do attitude got her through many life crises, and sustain her to this day, making inspiring reading for non-fiction fans.
