Since it is the author’s contention that a lack of respect for the authority of God’s inspired revelation, the Bible, is the greatest reason for the moral crisis in America today (and in the world generally), this material has been made public. Satan’s influence through the false philosophy of situation ethics may be seen on a daily basis in our present day society and culture. While Joseph Fletcher’s doctrinally poisonous book of 176 pages is not responsible for all the moral, ethical problems in our society, his efforts at influencing religious people toward a liberal, lax, and faulty interpretation of the Bible cannot go unnoticed. It is hoped that the reader will find an easy reference to Fletcher’s doctrines and their Biblical refutations. Most important, it is hoped that this will aid the sincere Bible student to follow’s God’s ethical rule for his life (that is, the New Testament, Jude 3; 2 John 9-11; Acts 2:42) and assist in his awareness of Satan’s devices (2 Corinthians 2:11; I Peter 5:8; Matthew 7:15).

Hopefully, in a small way, this material will help one to become more alert to the practice of situation ethics around us. Paul warned us to beware of false philosophy (Colossians 2:8). (Check out the Paperback edition also!).

The sophistry of Joseph Fletcher that embraces and promotes an amoral lifestyle is ably refuted in a Biblical way by Gary Grizzell. Grizzell's critique of Fletcher's, "Situation Ethics The New Morality" is succinct and clear. Grizzell shows that Fletcher's philosophy is not a "new morality" at all, but simply a rehash of the "old morality" of the ancient pagan world.

This brief book purports to refute the arguments made by Fletcher in "Situation Ethics." The author cites Fletcher's statements in support of his position that situations not laws, rules, or commandments determine how a person should act. I did not agree with all of Fletcher's ideas. But, did agree that in some situations not adhering to the obeyng the exact letter of a Biblical commandment is the way to act. For instance, telling a lie in order to protect someone. Fletcer cited a situation in which a doctor in a Jewish prison camp did abortion operations on over 3000 women. If the Germans had determined the women were pregnant they would have automatically been executed. I agree that the doctor did the right thing.
Grizzell cites Fletcher's "situations" and then gives Biblical verses that state lying, abortion, whatever is always wrong. He does not make his own arguments about how acting according to the Bible in these "situations" could be right if it resulted in serious harm to someone. It reminds me of the old catch phrase that was on the communion table in the church I attended as a child and young person - "The Bible said it, I believe it, that settles it." I prefer Fletcher's idea that the most important factor in making a decision is that it is done "in love." I think that is another way of saying, "What would Jesus do?"
That being said, I do not agree that all of Fletcher's situations can be justified - adultery being one. I think Fletcher goes too far in his dismissal of all rules. According to him just about any law can be disobeyed if done for the right reason. It has been a while since I read Flether's book, but I do not remember getting the impression that he did not believe that God exists.
