"A Duty of Remembrance recounts the lives of two families during the first half of the twentieth century. August, a cooper, spent WWI in Flanders carrying the dead and wounded by horse-drawn wagon to the field hospital. His son, Gustel, joined the SS at the age of twenty; saw his first action September 1, 1939 during the invasion of Poland. He was deployed in an Einsatzkommando unit to the Ukraine, and, then, as a Gestapo officer back in the Reich and in Greece.
Schoolteacher Herbert was a passionate National Socialist as were his daughters, Irmgard and Erika. His son, Manfred, joined the Waffen SS at the age of eighteen and saw his first action in Dieppe. Captured by the Russians at twenty-one, he spent five years in the Gulags of Siberia and in the Lubyanka in Moscow. Erika, fleeing from the Russians during the trek of women and children, was one of only four women to make it to the West. Irmgard and her two little girls were driven out of their home by French troops; they spent weeks on the road.
Although disillusioned and feeling betrayed by their government, all rebuilt their lives."

Gudrun Moore was born in war-time Germany. She immigrated to Canada in her twenties, became a teacher, and later a farmer in the Peace River Country of Northern Alberta. Retired to the Okanagan Valley, she and her husband, Jim, travel when not busy running a B&B and a small orchard.

5.0 su 5 stelle Authentic report of a German family - before, during, and after WWII 14 luglio 2010
Di Martin - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile
A very interesting and authentic book. It tells the life stories of the members of a German family in the 20th century. Part of them were ardent National Socialists. For them the collapse of the National Socialist system was more than just a disappointment. It was a trauma that persisted for their whole life. The book includes the story and the view of August Haefner, a SS officer who was later condemned to prison for having been involved in killing Jewish civilians and Russian prisoners of war during World War II. The fascinating book contains huge amounts of previously unpublished original reports and memories of the family members who participated in WW II.

5.0 su 5 stelle Misguided love for German fatherland 22 agosto 2010
Di Convinced Democrat - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile
Gudrun Moore describes in great detail the story of her two middle class German families, occasionally their bucolic, almost "romantic" circumstances of life. But by and large she points out their deep love of their German fatherland and, born out of this, their devotion to the Nazi cause, especially on the part of her parents and motherly grandparents. This then leads to absolute obedience - "one must follow orders" - and terrible deeds by her father. Frequently Mrs. Moore allows her protagonists to tell in their own words what he or she has felt, thought, endured and, last but not least, done. One is torn between sympathy and abhorrence about their sufferings on one side and their misguided love for the German fatherland with ensuing unspeakable crimes on the other side. After the war for some members of her family it was hard to admit that they were wrong. Mrs. Moore must be highly commended for so honestly remembering and publishing this intimate tale of her family.

This is a very interesting book with interesting details and pieces of history that, no doubt, will be new to many. One never gets tired of reading stories about another's family when they are so interestingly written. Thank you for taking the time to write it!
5.0 su 5 stelle Family Autobiography 6 febbraio 2011
Di J Rink - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile
"A Duty of Remembrance" is a family autobiography contributed by family members in their own words which makes for interesting and reflective reading. Most of the book I have read twice and some of the happenings have enlightened me.

The system, or rule of government was set up that, once committed, there was no withdrawal. It was kill or be killed.

Thanks for your efforts in writing this book.
