The Village of East Hampton is a village in Town of East Hampton, New York. It is located on the South Fork of eastern Long Island. The population was 1,334 at the time of the United States 2000 Census. Founded in 1648 by English farmers, East Hampton remained a quiet farming community until the late 19th century, when it began to develop as a resort for the wealthy upper class from New York City. It has become a major weekend destination for New York City, Westchester and Rockland County residents during the summer.
