DAVID EMIL HENDERSON is an award-winning writer, editor, and publisher (and marketing vp) for newspapers in Illinois, Montana, and California, including those owned by Time, Inc., Gannett, Media News Group, The Tribune Company, and the New York Times. While flying from New York to San Francisco, he set aside a paperback he had purchased at an airport kiosk and gazed out the window. The rolling land beneath the wings started him thinking about a madcap road race to the West Coast, with agents pursuing a man and woman who hardly know each other. Those thoughts ended his boredom on that flight, and this book is intended to produce similar results for all those who read it, flying ot not.

QUICK READ 3 marzo 2012

Escape by David Emil Henderson

Escape was a real surprise, and a pleasant one. The cover illustration attracts attention but doesn't measure up to the excellent writing inside. I enjoyed an exciting, action-packed, super-fast read about a resourceful architect and a feisty female property manager who run into each other by accident. Finding that they are targeted for another accident - a fatal one - by renegade government agents, they combine forces in more ways than one and escape one near-capture after another from Chicago to Carmel-by-the-Sea. There's enough action, romance, intrigue and suspense for anyone. Escape had another title in an earlier edition but the new title tells the tale more accurately. The author's expressed intent was to produce a good quick read, and he has done it.

David Henderson's many years of newspaper writing and editing experience has paid off in his recent edition of Escape!, a romantic thriller (Pine Tree Arts, 2013, 330 pages). Henderson has spun a fast moving chase story, with two strangers at the beginning of the yarn, Grey Harper and Elissa Pope, having to run for their lives from some Federal Government agents, even though the alleged crime is not clearly stated. The chase takes place in autos, then planes, then autos again, across the western half of the U. S. Along the way, Grey and Elissa get better acquainted with each other's complex persona while staying in motels and eating in restaurants. Most readers will wonder whether and when they will get to the romance part. Henderson tells the story with enough detail to get the reader worried about the couple's welfare, but he spares the frilly detail. There is room for the reader's imagination to fill in the blanks.
The chase plot continues all the way to the end. A surprising end awaits all the involved parties.

At times like this, I wish Amazon offered half stars. If they did, this would be a 3.5-star review.

The story line was strong enough to keep me reading to the end, but not as compelling as I'd hoped from the description of the book. The heroine is an intriguing character who shows some real growth and development as the story advances, in contrast to the hero who is fairly 2-dimensional throughout and ultimately simply not credible.

As the story reached its climax, the author tossed in an interesting twist but he weakened its impact by sending the scene's participants into an endless conversation that stalled the plot's pace. In fact, overall, the unevenness of the plot pace does this book in. The epilogue is too long, too rambling, and ultimately unnecessary.

I'm not sorry I gave this new author a try and I'll give him another shot in the future. He clearly has talent and room to grow.
