This story deals with some very close friends of mine. First, there's Comet, a retired racing Greyhound, then Igloo, an Alaskan Malamute (very large and very strong), and the wise and experienced Rodrigo, a Spanish cat (don't ask). The three friends converge on the life and times of Rob and Jesse Brooks and their eight year old daughter, Patty, in the Queens neighborhood of Fresh Meadows in New York City. The area is urban, noisy and crowded with children, people of all sizes, colors and backgrounds and is a place of complete mystery to a four year old Greyhound whose life has been devoted to racing. Running is what he loves and running is what he does...but not quite fast enough to remain at the track. One day Comet finds himself plunked down in the middle of a brand new world. He's got a new family and a new place to live complete with new sounds and smells. How's a guy to get through all that? Why, with a mentor like Rodrigo de Santana, the Spanish cat. Rodrigo is an old-timer in the neighborhood who knows everyone and everything and he's joined in the task of educating Comet in by Igloo, the gentle giant. Their adventures in getting to know one another, in dealing with Patty and her friends and in discovering the wonders and dangers of big city life will make you laugh, keep you interested and be fun for young and old readers alike.

Also by Arnold Haber: Fast Dog-Cool Cat-Hot Dog and The Peanut Butter Trail Arnold Haber, Arne to his friends, is a native New Yorker, born and raised in the borough of Brooklyn and currently living in the Oakland Gardens section of Queens. A retired pharmacist and community health planner, Arne spends his time either blogging about the Great American Songbook or writing about his adventures with Sweets, a 14 year old retired racing Greyhound. Although Sweets went to the rainbow bridge in November of 2010, they had been together for more than eleven years. As a result Arne put together several pieces of fiction in the form of short stories and two novels with his muse, Sweets, as a central character. They spent their days either strolling through the neighborhood or doing their thing at home. While Sweets dug pasta, pizza and liberal licks of peanut butter, Arne would kick back by listening to his collection of jazz cd's and writing about his buddy.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Greyt Story!!! 14 luglio 2012

This was a fun, easy read. It covered some very interesting territory, by going into a good bit of detail in what an adopted dog may go through. Once people realize that dogs may have a whole different spin on life, they tend to become better and more caring owners.
A nice addition was the heroine learning how to deal with "mean" people. There are bullies out there so having a game plan is a good way to go.
Please write more books, I would love to have a library of your work!
( I did read this one aloud to my 4 Greys, 2 Jack Russells, Corgi and Catahoula...they loved it, but the Russells think you do need a JRT to control the cat...sorry...)

This book tugged at my grown-up heartstrings and your child will love it, too. Greyhounds finding families after racing touch the lives of many lucky people, including myself, and this author brings the magic of that event to life. As a retired teacher, I would highly recommend this book to elemementary teachers as a read aloud in the classroom. It would lead to many valuable discussions about family, new beginnings, friendships, loyalty, kindness, bullying, decision-making and the importance of being helpful and respectful. What a goldmine! Parents should read it with their children. This author understands that children and animals can and do communicate with one another on a level that most grown-ups have forgotten about. I believe, like Arne Haber and E. B. White, that children can hear animals talking because they really listen, but adults are too busy talking and that's why we don't hear them. Don't hesitate to buy this book for your son, daughter, grandchild or classroom - it has something for everyone.

I adored this story of Comet the retired racing greyhound, Rodrigo, the sassy and worldly Spanish cat, Igloo the Alaskan Malamute and their pal Patty. In this first story we learn how Comet comes to live with Patty and how they help him transition from the track to home life. As a greyhound adopter myself, the story was spot on. Children will love the story because the animals are endearing but also because of their loyalty to Patty. When Patty is bothered by a bully at school not only does she stand up for herself, refusing to be a victim, but her animal pals are there to back her up if she needs them. This is a wonderful story that children of all ages will enjoy but for those of us who love greyhounds it is a great way to bring attention to the breed and encourage adoption. Two paws up!

Comet (a retired greyhound) comes to live with Patty and her Mum and Dad. The story follows Comet's experiences while adjusting to his new home with his new family. He makes friends with Rodrigo the cat, and a new arrival, (another rescue dog), Igloo. While showing how great a greyhound can be as a pet, this story instructs us in a gentle way about the responsibility of pet ownership, as well as all the joys that come with it. It also shows how someone can overcome being bullied - which is a valuable lesson for anyone. This is a lovely book which has several fabulous messages for us, whilst providing a rollicking adventure seen through the eyes of Comet, the delightful brindle greyhound! The illustrations are beautiful and provide a visual aspect that just enhances this delightful story. Thoroughly recommended!
