As for weight loss strategies, there are no universal recipes. It is case by case basis. You have to get your doctor’s approval. There should be no harm to your health. Certain medical conditions require small frequent meals, eliminating some food groups and etc… But the common denominator is portion control, clean eating (very important!) and active life style (if you sweat 60 minutes in the gym and spend the rest of your day sitting at your desk, it does not count). Everything starts with mental state. The book is very convincing about it. It makes you feel encouraged to look beautiful, to dress tasteful, feel good about yourself in any environment – at home, at work, with friends. It does not depend where you live (although people in Manhattan or Boston are more tended to look elegant and than in countryside…), you can make it everywhere. It will benefit you and everybody and anything around you: your loved ones, your job situation, your relations with friends and etc…
Throw away your baggy pants and frozen foods from supermarket fridge! Buy something more good looking (it is available for any size and budget!) and start your new life!
More importantly, it seems as if this book is not really true to the French diet/lifestyle. The author still suggests that you start off with some decidedly non-French diets to lose weight and then just use the French "diet" for maintenance. Mais non!
If you are interested in exploring the real French diet/lifestyle, I would recommend Sally Asher's "Losing It In France" and Dr. William Clower's "The French Don't Diet" books much more highly.
