Sinossi

A cave adventure turns perilous as history raises a mystery.

Guy Toulouse is an unmotivated high school student obsessed with his self-image and a girl out of his reach. When he flees to the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State to escape his troubles in Seattle, he doesn't expect to encounter a dangerous gangster, a mystery surrounding 16th-century European buccaneers, and a hidden cave with a grisly history.

Nor does he expect to discover a connection between the historical mystery and a recent unexplained death. Or to become trapped underground with a too-smart girl he dislikes. In order to survive, he needs to call on resources he didn't know he had and re-think what--and who--is important to him. The trouble is Guy doesn't know if he is up to the job.

L'autore

Erich Eipert is a German-born, Iowa-reared former farm boy who left tractors behind to earn a PhD in immunology. He chucked out the degree soon after moving to the Pacific Northwest and now divvies his time between family and pursuits that include speculation in natural resource stocks, hiking the great American West, and writing both fiction and nonfiction. On his website at ErichEipert.com he reflects on youthful heroes, literary adventures, and history.

The Author warns you in the beginning that you will probably hate the main character, and he was so right. Guy Toulouse is self-centered, arrogant, spoiled and what a lot of teens are, dissatisfied with everything. He whines and places blame on anyone but himself.
The first half of the book is a bit boring and it's hard to continue but if you keep at it, the second half of the book will reward you.
Lost in the caves near the ocean, no way out, the personality of Guy will under go many changes, most for the better.
Believe it or not, I think my biggest grip is not Guy himself, but the way he keeps referencing Gerald. Gerald said this and Gerald said that and that would be Geralds words. That got a bit trying and old. A few times is okay, but the constant took away from the story, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. I would suggest dropping about 80 percent of the reference to Geralds words.
I would read more of this Author if they learn to beef up the beginning to reach the end. I enjoyed the last half of the book very much and wish the first half was even partly as interesting.Guy Going Under: A Cave Adventure

A real page-turner... once the adventure begins, you might as well be trapped in the cave with Guy because you won't be able to tear yourself away. I had to read one more chapter, then one more chapter, late into the night. Besides being a fun adventure read, it's also got substance- I loved learning some of the more obscure history of early European explorers and peering into some of the mysteries that still exist today in the white space of the history books. If you've ever spent any time in western Washington, Erich Eipert nails the feel of it in his descriptions.

The author of "Guy Going Under" starts his story slowly, working to establish his characters' relationships, but once he accomplishes that task, the adventure evolves and I was sucked into the 'movie'. I enjoyed the visuals of the cave dangers and the growth and humor of Guy's personality. As the tale ends, I found myself wishing it would go on to a completion of Guy's maturity in his relationship with his Dad.....obviously, I like 'happily everafter'.

What stands out most for me about this book is the suspense. The author is a master at making me worry that worse things are just about to happen. I found myself reading until all hours of the night to find out whether Guy just stays in the proverbial frying pan or plunges into the fire.
The cave and bootlegging are extra bonuses. What is real and what is a product of the author's imagination?

I wasn't sure I was going to like this story about a teenager from Seattle, but I really enjoyed it. The characters are believable and interesting. His settings are well chosen and he paints a clear picture of them.

I thought the ending was a little abrupt but I think that was because this is the first in a series. All-in-all, a pleasure to read.
