Sinossi

Who was Irene Manning? She was a beautiful, talented, wilful, and rebellious woman who performed in every field of entertainment . Within this musical biography is revealed her thirty-two year friendship with the author, Gene Arceri. She trained for Grand Opera, but became a star in musical comedy on Broadway, London and motion pictures, starring opposite James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and Dennis Morgan. Radio, television, and night clubs were also venues for her varied talents.

From cowboys, (Gene Autry); to presidents, (Ronald Reagan); from legendary musicians, (Glenn Miller), to immortal composers, (Kern, Lerner and Loewe), this is an archival story for reference and theatrical history; the genesis of theatrical history.

Several of the most important treasures of the book include Guy Bolton's personal letters, which are printed here for the first time; concerning the genesis of his legendary smash hit musical still playing on Broadway, "Anything Goes". They present a remarkable study of the creative process behind an endearing, decades old musical produced on stage throughout the West End London, Manhattan, New York and provinces.

5.0 su 5 stelle Honest and Sentimental Without Being Maudlin 13 luglio 2013

Author Gene Arceri's biography of his close friend Irene Manning is an enduring tribute to a lady who may very well be the greatest star that almost was. Manning was a singer and actress who was equally adept at performing in concert, strutting her stuff in musical theater, emoting and singing in films as well as serenading avid radio listeners. Inexplicably, Manning also seemed to be on the precipice of stardom without ever quite making it.
In this thoughtful book, the reader is treated to reading in Manning's own words her account of a life in the performing arts that was often at odds with her personal needs as well as her own inherent integrity. As a counterpoint, Mr. Arceri fills in additional information and his own personal recollections to flesh out Manning's memories and add a sense of continuity. The end result is a book that answers a lot of questions about the lady and why she essentially turned her back on Hollywood after a promising start and big screen buildup.
Every biography should have a large cast of characters and this book is crawling with familiar names from the past and present such as Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Ann Sheridan, Jane Wyman, and Robert Redford. Interspersed throughout the text are pictures of Irene at different points in her life and career and photos of her friends.
Despite some misspellings and a couple of vague references, this book is well organized and well written. While it was a relatively short book that came in under two hundred pages, it seemed much longer and benefited from strong internal footnoting and comments.
What made this book standout for me was the extreme amount of candor that the seemingly private Manning exhibited when she opened up to her confidant Arceri. From her failed marriages to her admitted perfectionism, what emerges is a classy lady who never sold herself short and never seemed dated even in old age.

Irene Manning: The Rebellious Prima Donna. This book was extremely well written. Interesting, to the point, easy to understand. The author, Gene Arceri has a way of putting words together that makes it hard to stop reading. The history of Irene Manning was brought to light in a way that is inspiring to say the least. I read the book 2 times and probably will a third time. Les Webb

Having a great interest in old movies I was surprised to learn that I had never heard of Irene Manning but bought this book as I am a great fan of Gene Arceri's style of writing and have all his books.

This one held me spellbound with anecdotes from major stars of the Golden era and
I must applaud Mr. Arceri for all the information contained therein. It was fascinating to read of his and Irene Mannings' friendship for so many years and I found myself wishing to be a part of that era.

I am about to read this book for the second time and am truly pleased I bought it - Many thanks Mr. Arceri.

I found this an entertaining and informative read for mainly two reasons. Unlike many of the grande dames of the silver screen who were Irene Manning's peers, I was not overly familiar with her life and the background to her career so this provided a wealth of detail in that regard.
In addition, while she is the focal point and centrepiece of the book ( understandably), it also has a volley of interesting data about other major stars ( Cagney, George M. Cohen etc) and some of the lions of the Musical Theatre such as Jerome Kern, Lerner and Loewe and the like.

Mr. Arceri clearly enjoyed a close and long term friendship with Irene Manning, which has given him some rare and personal insights. Customarily, when a star is launched into being with great promise, as was this lady, they reach the trajectory of the A List stellar screen bodies and remain there in orbit for some time. She did not achieve the lofty pinnacle reached by Davis, Hepburn, Crawford, Taylor, Hayworth etc. The reasons are well shown in this book. Irene Manning: The Rebellious Prima Donna
