Sinossi

This story takes place in the rugged coal fields of the segregated south, during the late 1940's. Nothing much had changed there in a very long time. Because of the social attitudes of that time and place, it was unlikely that the two people in this story would ever have even met. Then, one summer, something happened there that upset the status quo. A local boy is fascinated as he watches things unfold and begins to see that things are not as easily understood as he had been led to believe. "Bad things happen when there's no one around to see."

L'autore

Ron Charles is an actor, photographer and writer. He has written many stories. But, this is the first story he has written that is in any way biographical.

5.0 su 5 stelle A friend who lives in Brazil recommended this book to me and I'm very glad he did. 10 gennaio 2011
Di randy dodge - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile
A friend who lives in Brazil told me he liked this book very much and thought I would also like it. He was absolutely right. I loved it. This is a very special story that weaves a fascinating tale about an unexpected friendship, in a time and place most of us know very little about. Though relatively recent, taking place shortly after World War II in the American south, it's almost like reading an account of another time, in far more distant history. Much of it is told in the vernacular and really creates a small time capsule of a time and place that makes for fascinating reading. This story will surprise you and warm your heart. As you read it, you feel as though you are actually seeing the images. It totally captures your interest and the writing virtually flows. It's true southern gothic; an unusual, wonderful and well written story. Reminiscent of "To Kill a Mockingbird". An excellent read.

5.0 su 5 stelle July Culler is a great read! 5 febbraio 2010

I found this book interesting and well-written. It deals with the significant themes of a boy's coming of age and his first major encounter with racial issues in an overwhelmingly white subculture.
Someone ought to give a copy of this book to Morgan Freeman or Samuel Jackson, because the title character would be a very attractive part for a major black actor in his maturity, and this book deserves to be on film.

Di Kathleen Estrada - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

Very special. I could not put this book down. I enjoyed the personal aspect, I could feel the author speaking from the heart. Ron Charles conveyed the the circumstances and feelings of of a very specific time and place. I especially enjoyed the ending. I felt I played a part in the tribute to July Culler and felt as though I had met the man myself. Well done Mr Charles.

5.0 su 5 stelle Highly recommended tale from the south. 13 dicembre 2013
Di Joan Cash - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile
This is a highly readable, page-turning, and profound story, written about a true story of the south. The author successfully captures the dialect and colorful language of his place of birth, in a tale of deception, morality, and celebration of the human spirit. I recommend it highly for thinking readers, and those who just enjoy a good story, well told. Joan.

4.0 su 5 stelle This author really knows how to tell a story! 25 gennaio 2009
Di Leslie L. Monsour - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile
Ron Charles has written a wonderful "fictional memoir" account of a boy's experiences in a small coal mining town in Virginia during the years following World War II. Through carefully recalled detail, unexpected plot turns, accurately drawn idiosyncrasies of dialogue, character, and setting, the straightforward narrative delivers an important and unique tale. Charles truly understands the skill of vivid story-telling and the importance of originality in handling a topic as sensitive, historical, and well-covered as mid-century racism in the United States. Engrossing and human in its approach, the book compares to the film, "Sling Blade," through its memorable characters and timeless morality. This is a true piece of Americana. Great reading for adolescents, old-timers, and everyone in between!
