Kids will love this 18 novembre 2013

Refreshing and endearing, Kupuna Kane’s ‘Keoni: The Good Menehune’ is a delightful tale about a young “strange” boy named Keoni who is destined to do great things—whatever these things are left to be seen in the subsequent books in what the author says is a series of five books for children.

As it happens, Keoni is a young Menehune who simply loves doing things differently. The Menehune are magical beings that are similar to leprechauns, but Keoni is different from the rest of the Menehune because of his size and the things he prefers to do. While he can also perform magic, he’s taller than the average Menehune, and he sleeps at night while the rest of the colony do what Menehune are supposed to do. And like normal human kids, he loves hanging out at the beach, guarded by his grandmother. And everything seems uneventful until one day, the glittering little people arrive to tell Keoni about what’s in store for him.

Young readers will learn about a bit of Hawaii’s history and way of living. Young readers will also be “transported” to the beautiful beaches of Hawaii and “play” with Keoni on the shoreline as they read about the young Menehune’s adventures with the glittering little people, especially as he later learns about his suspenseful destiny.

Overall, ‘Keoni’ is an easy, enjoyable read that I bet children of all ages will love—this is a great prelude to what appears to be an exciting series of tales for children. I can’t wait for Kupuna Kane to release the rest of the books in this series. A well-earned five-star rating for this one.
