From a Botany Tannery to Sydney's exclusive Palm Beach, and the battlefields of WW1, Love-War and Motorbikes is a bitter sweet tale of lost dreams, lost friends, and the search for a better place.
Growing up in a long forgotten Sydney fishing village Geoff's days are spent fishing in the bay, catching pigeons, and dreaming of motorbikes. It's the fifties, change is in the air, factories are coming to the village.
The dreamy childhood ends the day his mother leaves the family home and unable to connect with his war damaged father Geoff drops out of his selective high school to labour in a tannery.
He meets Johnny Dunne and Teddy Preston, they become best friends and the motorcycle mad teenagers make a pact to be Speedway Riders at the famous Sydney Showgrounds. There is only one happy ending.
After an accident ends his Speedway career Geoff sells his motorcycle dealership and moves far away to begin a new life in Western Australia. But the call of home is too strong and he returns to NSW to find peace on the outskirts of Sydney in a home only accessible by boat.
As always he moves on. Next is Bellingen, a new age town on the NSW north coast, then back to Sydney and Palm Beach. A heritage B&B in Tasmania works for a time but again home calls.
He travels to France and the small village of Bellicourt where his father won the Distinguished Conduct Medal in the dying days of WW1.
Finally Rosemary, his long suffering wife, puts her foot down. Time to stop roving.

Couldn't put it down from start to finish. Absolutely loved it. I have always been interested in speedway and it was great getting an inside view.

I loved the stories about Geoff starting in Speedway , having to "break in" to the inner sanctum that was Sydney Showground , to get rides , and to have to be accepted by the other "Top Name " riders .
I found some parts a bit confusing as to who he was refering to in the story , but overall it was a great read for someone who is as interested in Speedway Sidecars as I am .
