I bought this knife for gardening. I had always heard of Opinel's quality, but had never owned one. Since I grow a lot of tomatoes, cantaloupe, and other things that grow on vines, I figured I would give it a try.

The thin blade profile sharpens easily and slices through fibrous vines very well. The Inox steel holds an edge well. I would prefer a carbon steel blade, but I imagine it works well for those that may not have much experience or care a lot about knife maintenance. Either way, I got it hair popping sharp and have maintained it. The locking ring is strong and keeps the blade locked. A little oil at the joint helps keep it lubricated and prevents sticking.

I liked this little knife so much I decided to take it camping. Again, it really performed. The spine was sharp enough to throw sparks from a ferro rod, and food prep was a breeze - the thin blade cut through tomatoes, potatoes, and meats with little effort.

The only thing I have added to the knife is a lanyard to help secure it on my person. Since the initial sharpening, I have only had to strop it to maintain the edge.

This is not a "hard use" knife, and you can't baton wood with it. However, for what it is, it is fantastic. I wound up buying three more to have in my pack, truck, and use for general utility around the house.

UPDATE 2/1/2015

I love this little knife. It's a fantastic slicer, works well on thick tomato vines, slices tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers paper thin, and even goes out with me when I'm camping for food prep. I wish they made this knife with a carbon steel blade, but the stainless holds a keen edge. I remain quite pleased.
