Sinossi

You can't deny the music...

Althea is trapped in a reclusive commune where she is forced to wear a sack-like garment according to the restrictive laws set down by inflexible elders. But growing inside of her is the 'music', a stirring rhythm demanding that she dance. When Miss LaForge contrives Althea's escape to study at the sack-free Institute of the Arts, she hides the truth of her scholarship from her parents and the elders to embark upon the adventure of her life.

Her joy soon ends though, when her friend, Colin Reed, writes about her peerless dance performance. She is whisked home to marry a dominating elder and soon realizes that if she doesn't escape the commune, she may lose her last opportunity for freedom . . . as well as her life.

5.0 su 5 stelle I love Althea! 23 gennaio 2012

I love Althea! She has a dream - a burning desire - to dance. Unfortunately, Althea is forced to wear this terrible sack-like garment that stops her from dancing. What can she do?

I was so caught up in Althea's story that I couldn't put The Sack down. Gwen Peterson Choate is a true story teller, who has left me wanting more. She and Althea have made me want to chase my dreams!

5.0 su 5 stelle Excellent Story 21 gennaio 2012
Di Journey - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

Althea has to dance, it's that simple. But it is also against everything she has been taught to believe. Will she break free of her sack-like environment as easily as she tossed aside her sack-like garment when she learned to dance? Or will she be forced to return home and live a life of private misery with an older man who would, essentially, own her? This story could have been ripped right out of last year's newspaper headlines about women and children living in an oppressive cult, forced to marry older men against their wills. The tension grabs you from the first page, and it doesn't let go until the end. It's a story that sticks with you long after you close the book. Great read!
5.0 su 5 stelle Beautiful language! 25 giugno 2013
Di Barbara Youree - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

On the first page of The Sack I knew I was in for a treat of delicious language, filled with vivid images and metaphors like, "For a week, heat and humidity had squatted over South Texas like a hen with chicks..." Add to that the idea of girls and women of this strange culture who live with the lower half of their bodies enveloped in a sack and the reader feels their discomfort throughout the story. Yet, such figurative descriptions enhance and never detract from the swift moving plot, full of suspense and surprises. The required sack becomes a symbol of any obstacle that puts a person--especially a sensitive girl--at a disadvantage in finding and working toward her dream. Althea--like most of the other characters--is multidimensional, leaving the reader guessing as to what she will do next. I loved reading this page-turner.
5.0 su 5 stelle A Great Read 22 febbraio 2012

It's been said that a well-written story crosses all barriers to genre and age recommendations, a statement that definitely holds true for Gwen Choate's recent book, The Sack. Beautifully crafted and expertly rendered, The Sack takes us beyond the ordinary to a fictitious world featuring a subculture with disturbingly realistic dominion over women. I am nowhere close to this book's intended young adult readership, but was mesmerized by its story from beginning to end. The Sack is believable fiction with a satisfying conclusion that makes you want a Part Two, because by the time you reach the last page, you've fallen in love with the heroine and want to follow her farther on her journey through life. 5.0 su 5 stelle The Inner Music 11 marzo 2012
Di Jeanne Crecy - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile|Acquisto verificato
Born into an isolated, rigidly controlled community, Althea's inner music, vibrating within her body, compels her to dance by night in a dark shed where she can throw off the hated sack that hobbles her, and follow her soul's rhythms. For a sweet, brief time, she is allowed to go to school outside the commune, becoming a brilliant dancer, but then is forced back into the sack that jails her body and the larger sack that imprisons her spirit. How does she escape? A story that captures you with its first words and stays with you long after the last page.
