Sinossi

The Thrill of Romantic Suspense Meets the Romance of 1800s America

Lured by a handful of scribbled words across a faded letter, Cara Hamilton sets off from 1896 Ireland on a quest to find the brother she'd thought dead. Her search lands her in America, amidst a houseful of strangers and one man who claims to be a friend--Rourke Walsh.

Despite her brother's warning, Cara decides to trust Rourke and reveals the truth about her purpose in America. But he is not who he claims to be, and as rumors begin to circulate about an underground group of dangerous revolutionaries, Cara's desperation grows. Her questions lead her ever closer to her brother, but they also bring her closer to destruction as Rourke's true intentions come to light.

5.0 su 5 stelle A Tale Well Told 5 ottobre 2012
Di D. A. Featherling - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile
I am not a terribly huge fan of historical fiction...but Elizabeth Ludwig gripped me from page one, with enough suspense, romance, and accurate history of the 1890's and the plight of the Irish so that I couldn't quit reading. Ludwig's heroine, Cara Hamilton is appealing and feisty without being over the top, while her hero is satisfyingly mysterious and strong. Just when I thought I had the plot figured out, Ludwig tossed me a curve (sometimes more than one) so that I was pulled farther and farther along in the story. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to not
only historical fiction buffs, but to those who enjoy a well-crafted suspense story with well-drawn characters and a sense of time/place not many authors are able to create. What can I say? I'm ready for number two in the series!

5.0 su 5 stelle Excellent, heart-gripping read! 29 settembre 2012
Di Sharlene Maclaren - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

This is a marvelous story of a time none of us recall but most have some knowledge of by way of stories passed down from grandparents and history books. The period I refer to - late 1890s, New York City - captures our imagination as we think of those who traveled across sometimes treacherous waters from various parts of Europe with high hopes for the future. In No Safe Harbor Cara Hamilton's reasons for traveling to Ellis Island differ in that she has left her homeland of Ireland to launch a search for a brother she thought dead -- until she receives a letter indicating news to the contrary.

This story is rife with conflict, tension, and intriguing twists and turns, as less than stellar characters come and go that lead us to believe Cara is in grave danger. Add to that the romance factor woven in and a plan that only God Himself could orchestrate, and you have found yourself a novel you won't be able to put down. It is one that truly holds you in its grip right up to the end, and when at last you do read that final sentence, you close the book and your eyes and emit a satisfying sigh.

I loved it!

5.0 su 5 stelle Full of Suspense and Romance! 30 novembre 2012
Di Charity U - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile
A good book, well-written and full of amazing suspense! I usually associate suspense with books set in the present, but this one had a full dose...and was set in the late 1800's. It was exciting and full of action! And I love the cover. Little side note there. Beautiful, and just right for the book. No Safe Harbor (Edge of Freedom) included (as mentioned) a bunch of suspense and just a little romance. One of the ending scenes was a little over-dramatic, I thought...something that reads very well, but almost certainly wouldn't happen in real life. Other than that, it was realistic and kept me turning the pages until late at night! I enjoyed it and will read more by Elizabeth Ludwig.

3.0 su 5 stelle Not Cliche Story 21 gennaio 2013
Di GodsVesselJan00 - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile
No Safe Harbor, by Elizabeth Ludwig, is the first book in the Edge of Freedom series. I enjoyed this read, as it was not at all a cliche fiction plot, or even just your typical sweet story. While it is definitely an easy read, this book draws you in to a story that begins at Ellis Island. There are secrets, murders, revenge, and lies, all set in the historical time period of the late 1800s.

Before this book, I had never heard of the Fenian brotherhood....actually I knew very little at all of Irish history. Elizabeth Ludwig intertwines the history with her story.

"Cara Hamilton had thought her brother to be dead. Now, clutching his letter, she leaves Ireland for America, desperate to find him. Her search leads her to a houseful of curious strangers, and one man who claims to be a friend - Rourke Walsh. Despite her brother's warning, Cara trusts Rourke, revealing her purpose in coming to New York." (taken from the back of the book)

One thing that I appreciated about this book (which, if you have read several of my reviews, you might know what's coming) is the way that the characters held onto their Christian values. Consciences were pricked at the lies and deceit, and revenge was shown for what it truly is: a horrible pit. While some of those themes could have been taken farther, in my opinion, I appreciated that this book is Christian fiction that actually had characters living out things clearly spelled out in the Bible. (So many authors give things like that up in the name of a good story.)

As I posted last week, my favorite quote from the book is one that was repeated a few times. "God's help is nearer than the door." The first time I read it, I just stopped right there to ponder it. I love that. God is so close that we can turn to Him in an instant!

I received this book for free from Bethany House Publishing in exchange for this review.

5.0 su 5 stelle An Intriguing Mystery 19 ottobre 2012
Di Coffee Addicted Writer's Reviews - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato:Copertina flessibile
Set in the year 1897, Cara Hamilton thought that her twin brother, Eoghan, was deceased until she gets an unexpected letter from him, in which he urges her to come find him and warns her to trust no one. She boards the ship called the Servia and travels across the Atlantic Ocean from Ireland to America.

When Cara arrives in New York, she meets a stranger named Rourke Walsh. She takes refuge at a boardinghouse where she befriends most of the women whom are living there, all except Deirdre. Why would a woman that hardly knew her, hate her so much? There has to be here than meets the eye about this woman. Cara is determined to learn more about Deirdre, especially when she catches Deirdre prying in her room.

Even though her brother warned her to trust no one, Cara lets her guard down and confides everything to Rourke Walsh. As she spends more time with him, she begins to have romantic feelings for him, but Rourke may not be person that he claims to be.

When I signed up to review No Save Harbor through Litfuse Media Group, I didn't know what to expect as I wasn't familiar with the author. I'm glad that I took a chance as I enjoyed reading this surprisingly intriguing mystery with twists and turns around every chapter. I recommend the book to everyone.
