1. Having been an avid hiker and mountain climber, plus a student of history, this compelling saga of Colorado's history, still totally unexplained, appealed to me. On a professional level, I have been a grant writer and manager for years, so it should come as no surprise that I've been telling stories for decades. Having spent time in the San Juans, there is a flavor to their history that is unique and even today, not well understood.2. Living in Upstate NY, we are used to winter, but even here, few have any comprehension how vast and dangerous the weather can be in the Rocky Mountains. I have tried to understand what survival requires in the worst situations. I wanted to work on the concept that anyone, even the most decent person, will revert to the animal when it was absolutely necessary.3. I Live in the rolling hills and mountains outside of Cortland, NY. I have a wonderful family and friends and as I'm finishing up my career with the State, am looking forward to the next phase of life.

The mass migration west was a time of rapid change and personal revolution. "Shadows of the San Juans" is one of these tales as Alfred journeys west and tries to make his way in the world. A fine tale of this new and confusing time in American history as it tried to recover from a civil war, "Shadows of the San Juans" is a choice pick and very highly recommended read for western fans.
