Sunderkand is the 5th chapter of the Hindu holy book Ramayan.

Sunderkand contains the story of when Rama went searching for Sita, when Rama and Hanumanji were at the border of the sea at Rameshwar. They were planning how to cross the sea and Jamwant reminded Hanumanji, that he had the divine power of flying.

The Sunderkand starts from the point when Hanumanji flew across the sea. The sunderkand tells the story of the great obstacles Hanumanji faced when he arrived to lanka in the search of Sita and how the great Hanumanji defeated all obstacles and demons in his path.

When Hanumanji reached lanka, he meets Vibhishan who is the brother of Ravana. Vibhishan tells Hanumanji about the critical situation of Sita. Hanumanji transforms into a diminutive form andmeets Sita after showing the proof of being the ambassador of Shree Rama.

Hanumanji than transforms into an amazing form and destroys the beautiful garden known as Ashok Vatika. Ravan gets annoyed and send’s his sons to kill Hanumanji.

However Ravans sons tried to overpower Hanumanji and as a result one of Ravans sons dies. The sons eventually overpower Hanumanji and bring him in front of Ravan. Ravan orders his guards to light a fire on Hanumanji’s tail.

Because of Hanumanji’s amazing powers, his tail became bigger and bigger and then the fire from his tail destroyed the whole of lanka.

After doing this Hanumanji went to meet Sita and said he will return with lord Rama to rescue her. Hanumanji told the whole incident to lord Rama on returning from Lanka. Rama then started his journey towards lanka by creating bridge on the sea to enter lanka.

The Sunderkand is supposed to have great spiritual power for its devotees.

This version of Ramayana has been written by shri Tulsidasji.
After completing the end verses of Kishkindhakand. Tulsidasji felt that the next part should be written in presence of Shree Hanumanji.

So then Tulsidasji started the following prayers; sadhana , upasana and aahwan to which Shri Hanumanji granted and arrived.

Sunderkand was then written in front of Shri Hanumanji and at the end of Sunderkand. Tulsidasji requested Shri Hanumanji to insert life in this kand, by blessing all devotees who recite this kand by freeing them from all worldly worries.
