This novel explores the shameful reality in the early 1960s of Britain abandoning her Far East colonies with scant concern for their inhabitants. (For instance, instead of long anticipated independence, the Borneo territories were given to Malaya, whereupon brown colonists replaced the white ones). The invented nation here is situated between Malaya and Thailand and the tale sets a terrible choice for its hero, a British army commander. I enjoyed the human relationships and the conflict between morality and political orders. Also the military actions against communist forces which probably only Masters, a soldier, could write.
PS. I bought the book for a song, secondhand at Abebooks.
