Brent Hightower grew up in Placitas, New Mexico, in the 1960s, in a family of scientists and teachers. His extended family was deeply divided by the Vietnam War and steeped in the destructive legacy of the Irish diaspora. The spiritual, intellectual, and psychological chaos of his upbringing and a painstaking effort of reconstruction have defined his life. He lives with his wife, Lauren, and daughter, Maeve, in Hawaii.

      Unforgettable characters and surprising events make this a more than an enjoyable read. The author takes you deeply into the spirit of the places and people that make up his world. You will laugh and cry and be changed. I loved this book.

      The Broken World is a surprisingly powerful and well-written novel by an unknown author (so far). I hope Brent Hightower writes more and gets the credit as an author that he richly deserves. This book is a refreshing departure from the formulaic mass-market fiction that is pushed on us by publishers today. Mr. Hightower's language is rich and colorful. The dialog is true and evocative. The story of growing up in a dysfunctional family in the 60's is full of simple truths and poignant observations about the impact of the people and events in our early lives on the rest of our years. This book is a great read, particularly for those of us in the Baby Boomer generation as we begin to reflect back upon the journey we have taken so far, no matter how different our growing-up experience might have been from The Broken World family. I highly recommend this book.
