What a fun book, that is if you enjoy thinking, enjoy math, and the thrill of solving a problem. This book provides eighty word problems, in which you much utilize some basic algebraic functions to solve. Upon getting this book, I immediately delved right in, and easily "conquered" the first few problems. Feeling pretty confident and even smug, I started working some of the more challenging problems, and quickly realized that there are some very challenging, thought provoking problems here. I worked through them and must say that they take many twists and turns, requiring creative problem solving skills. I found the book very interesting and challenged my level of math skills. Successfully solving these problems resulted in satisfaction and increased my ability to think, I am sure of it! As is stated in the book itself, some knowledge of algebra and equations is needed, so if you possess those skills, I would highly recommend this book and all of the challenges it holds. Answer's are provided in the back of the book It will not disappoint, as you will be busy with it for hours!
I teach a Financial Principles course and plan to incorporate this type of word problem into the class.

4.0 su 5 stelle Good, but with two major errors 29 agosto 2012

This review will contain two spoilers.

Problems #42 and #79 contain major errors.
In #42, the phrase "the fifth number is 3 less than twice the third number" should read "the fifth number is 3 less than twice the second number."
In #79, the phrase "the sixth number is 7 less than three times the tenth number" should read "the sixth number is 7 less than the tenth number."

There is also a minor typographical error in #51 and a large widow line in #66.
5.0 su 5 stelle Good practice for anyone looking to stimulate or refresh the mathematics gene. 26 gennaio 2012

I received a complimentary copy of the book by being a member of the Dorrance Book Review team. For details on how you can become a member go to the Dorrance website. I have always had an interest in math and this was an easy sell for me, but I kept thinking of great places for this book to be used. The two that I felt screamed for it were: First, for a substitute teacher who finds students flying through assignments that were left can put a few of these on the board and secondly for seniors (or anyone) who have found troubles with every day math like balancing a checkbook and others. I know plenty of people who need to challenge their brains once in awhile to keep their minds fresh. The problems in Mrs. Greene's work can be fun and the answers in the back go through them step by step for your comfort when checking your work whether you need to or not. Nice job. I highly recommend.
