4.0 su 5 stelle great story, beautiful illustrations, disapointing format 9 maggio 2006

Its a great book with beautiful illustrations, stories. The stories written alongside in Kanji script makes the book even better. However, the illustrations split randomly across two pages, destroys the beauty of Miyata Masayuki's paper cuts outs. Wish the book will be reformatted in the future to accomodate the illustrations in full on one page.

5.0 su 5 stelle GENJI/MIYATA 20 settembre 2013

THIS IS A REMARKABLE BOOK! I RARELY BUY SOFT COVER BOOKS BUT THIS IS AN EXCEPTION. IT IS AN ABBREVIATED VERSION OF A VERY LONG WORK. I PURCHASED THIS FOR THE ILLUSTRATIONS. MASAYUKI MIYATA WAS A VERY GREAT ARTIST WHO PASSED AWAY TOO YOUNG (1926-1997), AND WORKED IN AN OLD MEDIUM (KIRI-E) OF PAPER CUT WORK WITH AIR-BRUSHED SHADING. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOME OF HIS ORIGINALS (BEFORE PHOTO REDUCTION FOR PRINTING). ANYONE PURCHASING THIS VOLUME WILL BE MORE THAN SATISFIED, AND WILL PROBABLY, LIKE ME, SEEK OUT OTHER BOOKS HE ILLUSTRATED. "THE NARROW ROAD TO OKU" BY BASHO (THE GREAT 16TH CENTURY POET) IS A MASTERPIECE OF BOTH LITERATURE & ART AND WORTH THE EFFORT & PRICE TO LOCATE. YOU WILL FIND THAT YOU WILL RETURN TO THE GENJI SCENES REPEATEDLY. THIS BOOK WILL BE A TREASURE OF MY LIBRARY AND, I HOPE, YOURS.
