A mixed but fascinating collection of stories from a master storyteller. The volume 2 collection has a stronger concentration of stories from the bohemian world of circus, theatre and of French society through its classes. A story about how the Madame and ladies of a brothel take a two day holiday trip to a relative's confirmation is worth the purchase/download alone. And for Kindle users this is a free download at the time of writing. The translation which was a collective effort is generally very good. This is a set of stories as fresh and biting today as when they were written.

What can I say, but that I wish I was fluent enough in French to read it as he wrote it, to give me the full impact of his genius. You can't go through life as an educated person without reading his works. Get on it.
