Sinossi

One end-of-the-world prediction almost came true: humanity nuking itself to pieces. The one thing nobody tried to predict: how Mother Nature would reassert control over the environment.

Captain Dyne Lavere is one of a small number of skippers who delivers cargo all over the world. It's good money for those brave enough to fight off pirates, black market mercenaries, greedy skippers trying to monopolize the shipping industry, and, of course, the occasional assault from supernatural entities. The supernatural are no big deal since he, unfortunately, is one himself.

On one particular stop, Dyne acquires a fiery stowaway named Jessie who's just looking for a way to get home, but they both soon learn that their meeting is no coincidence....

3.0 su 5 stelle Emerging author: shows promise! 5 ottobre 2013

Ocean's End is the second book I've read from this author. Welles shows a definite talent for creating rich worlds you're itching to explore, and this book demonstrates that. Dyne, the captain of the Pertinacious, suffers from an unusual curse placed on him by a sea goddess. Jessie has been chosen by the same goddess to cross paths with Dyne, though neither fully understands why. Together, they seek to end Dyne's curse but in a ruined world where life is hazardous under the best of circumstances, can they do so without losing the people they love?

Dyne is a very likable character and I enjoyed the running gag with the cheeseburger. His easy-going attitude matched with a paternal obligation to care for his crew makes him easy to identify and sympathize with. I will admit I struggled with Jessie. For a character that spent a year being repeatedly raped by Tethys' crew until she stowed away on Dyne's ship, her sexual attraction to Mido after two weeks made me uncomfortable. And since Jessie gets more pages devoted to sexy-time than any other character, there was a lot of narration that I ended up skipping.

As I mentioned before, it's world-creation where Welles shines the most. I liked the post-apocalyptic Earth that she created, though I would have liked to explore it much more: there were a lot of questions that never quite got answered. For example, why do the quasi-children punish those who own guns, but are fine with other weapons like swords? Why do they leave Dyne alone once they are chased off, even though they must know he still has the gun? Why is O'Toole able to chase them off: why does the combination of "related to a quasi-child" and "mentally handicapped" give him this power? Why does Dyne resist using the powers granted to him by his curse and why does the goddess keep trying to force him to use them?

Overall, I liked the book. The action-filled passages mixed with the character development kept things moving nicely.

4.0 su 5 stelle Great story, bad editing 6 novembre 2013

This was a very good story. I enjoy futuristic fiction, paranormal fantasy, urban fantasy, and mythology. This book has a little of all the above! (With a little romance thrown in for good measure.) There was nothing wrong with the story, but oh my gosh it needed a good editor..So many grammatical errors and typos! If you can overlook all the mistakes and still stay in the story, you will enjoy it.

4.0 su 5 stelle Very Enjoyable Fantasy 26 ottobre 2013

This is the first book that I have read written by this author and I will certainly be reading more! This novel takes place in our future at some time after the "purge". What I enjoyed, however, is that the focus wasn't on the negative effects of the purge but instead it was mostly on mankind's resilience at rebuilding their lives. This story is about events that occur on a steam frigate that has to defend itself against pirates and other bad elements while at port & at sea. The novel focuses on the relationships of the crew and how they make life at sea work for them. Sometime in his past, the captain acquired a curse and his crew are all geared up to help him get rid of this problem so that he can continue his life without its effects hanging over his head. The Gods of Greek mythology may exist in this new world and wreak havoc if they so choose. I don't want give anymore of the story away since the fun part of reading fantasy is discovering the details as they are revealed. Nothing is worse than knowing what is about to happen because it was written in a review. Suffice to say that the eventful lives of the crew keep this story moving at a good clip. From an editorial perspective, there are a few typos but not enough to detract from this fun novel of life on the high seas. If you enjoy light fantasy blended with a touch of the paranormal then you will surely enjoy this fun read by SM Welles.

Thought the premise of the story was an exceptional concept. The characters involved were well thought out and believable. The author developed each character so that you had a picture of them in your mind.

A good read, both well written and well constructed. A final editing would clean up the very small number of errors, which were really not a distraction at all. Very pleased to have found this level of professionalism in an ebook. If you've a fantasy/sci-fi fan, I'd recommend you add this book to your reading list.
