Tokyo College of Music ( TÅkyÅ Ongaku Daigaku ) was founded as Toyo Conservatory of Music ( TÅyÅ Ongaku GakkÅ ) in Kanda, Tokyo in 1907. It is the oldest private music school in Japan.The founder , YonejirÅ Suzuki, introduced European classical music into the Empire of Japan. The college moved to its current location in Ikebukuro, Tokyo in 1924 after the original campus was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake.The 1923 Great KantÅ earthquake ( KantÅ daishinsai ) struck the KantÅ plain on the Japanese main island of HonshÅ« at 11:58:44 am JST on September 1, 1923. Varied accounts hold that the duration of the earthquake was between 4 and 10 minutes. The quake had a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale, with its focus deep beneath Izu ÅŒshima Island in Sagami Bay.
