The Crooning Spoon 12 dicembre 2010
Di Nikica Gilic - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Audio CD
The beautiful, mellow, swinging and soft side of one of the bluesiest singers...
Deftly aided by Pepper Adams on baritone, Bill Watrous on the trombone, Roger Kelloway on piano, Richard Davis on bass and Mel Lewis on the drums, Witherspoon gives magnificent mellow performances, often imbued with the bluesy feeling (with only couple of blues tunes on the entire album). By the time this album was recorded (the 60s), The Spoon was a seasoned singer and the idea to steer him slightly in the direction of jazz ballads (arranged by the pianist Kelloway)
was a winner.
Smack dab in the middle, to borrow from another popular song. All the songs are well known, true winners, so this album is great mainstream jazz listening. Maybe the hardcore blues fans won't be as thrilled with this album as I was, but it's great jazz - steeped deeply in blues feeling not only in vocals but also in instrumental contributions...
Giving 5 stars is the least one can do for this gem.

This is one of Jimmy Witherspoon's overlooked albums. It took me over a year just to find a 'Decent' Stereo copy of Vinyl (Yeah!, I'm still a Vinyl Junkie). Upon playing this album (I just threw it on for a minute while I was looking a Compact Disc to play for a friend who is into Doo Wop and Jazz)...within 16 (Sixteen) minutes (Up to Track 4) my Friend wanted a copy on Compact Disc!. It happened again (Later that night) when 2 (Two) more Friends came by to pick up they're music they had ordered. They BOTH were nodding off to sleep while I was gathering up their music...This was around 11:00 p.m. they both had been running around all day, so I figured this would be a good moment to play some more of this album. I'm thinking that they're sleeping, but to my surprise they BOTH were listening to it and saying how good it was! When I told them it was Jimmy Witherspoon, they couldn't believe it!!!! And was more surprised when they seen musicians: Bill Watrous, Pepper Adams, Roger Kellaway, Richard Davis, and Mel Lewis was backing Jimmy on these 1965-1966 sessions. When it was all said and done they BOTH ordered this on Compact Disc (One even ordered it on VINYL!).
Now let's talk music...There's only 1 (One) uptempo track "I'll Always Be In Love With You" which could have been left off (But's it's not THAT bad or painful). The rest of the tracks are just simply coooooooooooooool! The standout tracks are: "Lotus Blossom", "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You", "Trav'lin' Light", "P.S. I Love You", "Don't Worry About Me", "Easy Living", and "How Long Will It Take To Be A Man?". As you can see this is damn near the whole album! And you might have have noticed only a FEW are Blues songs. This is more of a cool jazz album with Blues-Overtones, which makes the title kinda misleading. Add this to your collection right away! While there are still some around...It is Out Of Print! Oh! And it is in STEREO on the Compact Disc edition :)
