The Eagle I wrote this poem about when I was living on Dr. M.J. Nachtriebs Ranch at Northrop, Colorado. In the mornings as I would leave to work I would see this pair of eagles above in their nest in a tree. At night when I got home I wouldn’t see them, but just before dark they would fly over the camper I was staying in. I always liked to think they were watching over me.

I have spent all my life handling cattle and horses, I have worked in feedlots, ranches and livestock auctions all my life, I am a native of southwest Colorado, but am currently living is Missouri. I came from a farming and ranching background so my poems will reflect that.. I call my poems more true to life than anything, I still to this day after writing them over 10 years cannot sit down and just make one up there has to be an incident that will cause me write one. I have a tendency to pick on friends and family. Also I have three grown daughters that have blessed me with six wonderful grandkids,,, I just hope that you enjoy my poems and feel free to contact me any time,,,, Happy reading Denny

From the time I received this book in the mail, it kept tugging at my heart to read it. I was very busy and I wanted to read it in peace and solitude..I admit, I took a quick glance through the pages right away, and the Windmill and Eagle caught my eye..I have a love for both, so I just had to read them! I was not disappointed!! I just finished reading the rest of the book and I recommend it to everyone. Denny has a way of putting you right in the book with him! I especially liked the way he explained what the poem was about...I do not have a favorite..each poem stands on its own..which makes it unique and special. You can tell that Denny loves his family, friends and country..a true cowboy:)

From the very first poem in the book by Denny Bertrand, The Eagle, you get a taste for the simplicity and the love of Colorado Country life that is Denny. He writes of his love for his Mother his Father his daughters and many of his friends. his poetry is a reflection of the daily world around him as life passes by. You will enjoy the common thread.

I've not ordered this book as of yet, but I will soon, and have read other western poetry written by Denny and I believe I've read drafts of some in this book. I've enjoyed everything I've read that he's written. This has been a dream of his for many years, I'm thrilled he has followed that dream instead of wondering for the rest of his life. He has followed thru with his plan, and that makes me happy for him. Keep up the great work Denny. Keep writing, western poetry and anything dealing with cowboys is becoming a lost art...I'd rate those that I have read in the past at least a 4 star. Happy reading.

Reading "Western Poetry with a Cowboy Flair" brought back memories of a simpler time. The ranchers that the author wrote about and their morale codes could have been written about many of the men I admired growing up. Their word was their bond and they did business with a handshake. I was equally moved by poems like "Where's the Ranches" and "Then and Now", a bold commentary on our disappearing ranches and farmlands. I hope that people that want to move out west to the wide open spaces, read this book and appreciate what the wide open spaces were all about.

I did like it. I know Denny and many of the people he talked about . He did bring them to life in his book . Looking forward to more of his books.
