Sinossi

It was just an ordinary life or was it?
Alicia's life is very ordinary. At school she is a cheerleader and does well in her classes. At home she is very loved by her mother and father. Things are about to change for Alicia, and very quickly. Her mother and father have accepted a job out of the country, which means Alicia will be in the care of her beloved grandmother. She is looking forward to the time with her, but almost as soon as she arrives, Alicia can feel something is different. In Alicia's room where she has slept when visiting her grandmother since she was a young girl, there now stands an old grandfather clock. Alicia is intrigued by its hypnotic ticking. Not long after, the dreams begin. Alicia could never imagine that a visit to her grandmother's would change her ordinary life into something magical.

In her dreams Alicia visits another time and place. A dangerous time, when soldiers armed with weapons of destruction decide who deserves to live. Alicia encounters a young man in her dream, Matthias who seems very disturbed to meet her. A part of Alicia is certain that all of this is a dream, but that certainty is no consolation when she hears the screams of a young child. In her dreams children are nothing more than possessions to be taken by the soldiers at their whim. Somehow Alicia has placed herself in the role of defender, as she bribes the soldiers with the promise of emeralds to protect the young children. Alicia is soon caught between the real world, filled with cheer leading, class assignments, and giggling over boys, and the world of her dreams. When her eyes close she is swept away to that dangerous time when there was no safety in being young, when just believing the wrong things or belonging to the wrong group of people, made you a target for bloodthirsty soldiers.

Alicia finds that even when she is awake the dreams are beginning to bleed into her thoughts and memories. Not only that, but she is exhausted! She can barely keep her eyes open, but no matter how much sleep she gets, it feels as if she has never really rested. The moment her eyes slip closed in one world, they open wide in another. As hard as Alicia tries to be helpful to those in danger in her dreams, it seems that every choice she makes only puts them more at risk. Matthias' temper is both frustrating and frightening, and what is worse, he always seems to be right. Each time she travels into these dreams Alicia worries that she will never find her way home again. Is it possible that one day she simply will not wake up?

What will Alicia do?
When she is awake she finds that her grandmother is acting more and more strangely each day.
    *     Is Alicia's ordinary life actually more mysterious than she could have ever expected?
      *     Will Alicia ever figure out what the dreams mean?
        *     Could there be something more magical occurring than just a vivid imagination?

Nigel really knows how to write a book that draws you in. Its only a short story but I just couldn't put it down until I finished it. I want to know which is the next book in the series now so I can go and buy it and continue on with the story so far. My only complaint at all about this book is that it finished :)

I was looking for something short to read sitting in the garden on a warm afternoon and this filled the bill perfectly. I read it on my kindle and it was formatted nicely. Now on to the next book....

First up I have to say that I have already read book three in this series and that is what prompted me to come back and read books 1 and 2. Peter Nogel is an awesome writer with a real talent for making the characters come alive - I feel I know Alicia and her grandmother as my closest friends, the writer is honestly that talented. This books sets up the series - you are made aware of mystery, dreams and a hint of the unusual set in characters that are totally believable. I don't know what spell this author included in his book, but I am happily spellbound and off to read book 2. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to escape the bus trip to work, the lunch time rush or the bedlam in their own household for just a little while :)

I found this book to be a little on the short side, but I have been reading mainstream novels on my Kindle, and it seems all the new books coming out are short. I guess that is why they are on the lower end of price. Having said that, this book sets the stage for an entire series, and gets us going with the characters all at once. You feel like they are family, and itching to get the next volume in the series, which is where I am headed now!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I started reading this book, but by the time I'd read the first couple of pages, I was hooked! I found the story line quite fascinating, and the characters very believable, and look forward to reading the other books in the series. This book is a great read.

Short stories, like books, have beginnings, middles, and ends.Even mere chapters have that. This "book"does not. There is mediocre beginning and a hint of a middle, but that's about it. The writing is awkward, as is evidenced by the title. There are pictures in the book - that's how it reaches it's presumed 34 pages. The pictures don't add anything, they're just there. There is one picture that supposedly represents the grandmother - she of the curly grey hair - but this is a woman with straight, white hair, so it's really just filler. There's also a photo of a brunette slouching at a desk - presumably the overly tired CARMINE haired Alicia...
This vignette ends with Alicia waiting to get on the school bus - and is immediately followed with a sales pitch for another book. Since this story went nowhere, why on earth would anyone want another by this author?
There is a trend among self-published authors to sell their tales as serials. It worked for Stephen King, after all. Other writers give you a full book for the cost of this poor 'serial'. This one isn't worth reading for free. The premise has potential. The author should try living up it.
