I loved one of the comments on the back cover of this book: "A laugh-out-loud, vociferously angry must-read". I would only add "Unequivocally poignant and touching".
I would give it 10 stars if I could. Love, hate, integration, familial relationships, tolerance, hope... this is what the book is about. A delightful, funny, moving read. Upsetting and uplifting at the same time.

Jackson, Mississippi, 1960s. When racial integration was still hardly tolerated, the respective paths of two black maids and a white lady belonging to the upper class circle cross. Their personal tales interweave and blend, with a project in mind which will ultimately rock the proverbial boat.

Each main character writes in first person: Aibileen, who is raising her umpteenth white child with love and dedication while constantly thinking of her own son, now dead.

Minny, Aibileen's close friend, married with several children of her own, a maid with a soft heart but a sharp tongue which gets her into trouble more often than not.

Miss Skeeter, a white lady with her own dreams, whose unconventional ideas contrast mildly, and later on, sharply with the society and family she was born into. She also wants to find out why the adored black maid who raised her, Constantine, has inexplicably disappeared. No one is willing to tell her.

Each lady is surrounded by her own sets of characters in the background, characters that however are primary pawns to what will eventually happen.

The author gives voice to Aibileen's and Minny's language superbly. You will find a language contrast between the well-schooled Miss Skeeter and both maids, which renders a vivid and true portrait of their lives and views.

This is, in my opinion, a rare timeless piece of narrative, which will make you think as well as entertain you like very few books can. Wonderful, really wonderful. Well done to the author Ms. Kathryn Stockett!

For a start, I have to applaud Kathryn for taking on such an theme and for the depth of her creativity. It is marvelous. It is written in an engaging and expressive manner that I find appealing . Your descriptions are rich, the characters are intuitively observed and the smooth flow of the story made it a compelling read. The full brilliance of this story is glaring for all see. Just coming from reading Fortune Calls, it wraps up my week very well.

E' uno di quei libri rari in cui tutto e' perfetto: originale la storia, i personaggi descritti con cosi' grande cura che ti sembra di averli incontrati davvero, la giusta dose di ironia, satira e denuncia sociale. Persino il linguaggio (leggetelo in inglese, mi raccomando!) differenziato in base ai ruoli, al ceto e all'eta' di ciascun personaggio ti da' l'impressione di essere li' con loro, ad ascoltarli ed osservarli nella loro vita quotidiana. Da leggere e rileggere!!!

Even though this is not my first language I found it easy and pleasant to read.

Dopo aver concluso la lettura di questo libro non ho potuto fare a meno di continuare a pensare ai suoi personaggi, mi sono immaginata come la storia avrebbe potuto proseguire... mi sono proprio entrati nel cuore. Il libro è molto realistico, nessuno è perfetto, nemmeno le eroine lo sono, e questo le rende ancora piu vere. La storia narra il rapporto fra le domestiche di colore delle bianche famiglie agiate del sud degli Stati Uniti negli anni sessanta. Non è un libro sul razzismo però, è un libro sulle ralazioni che vanno al di là dei confini, quei confini che spesso tracciamo su basi inesistenti. È scritto con grande maestria, leggetelo in inglese se potete, non riesco ad immaginarmi come si possa rendere lo stesso potere linguistico in una traduzione. La lettura è molto coinvolgente, passa dal divertente al drammatico attarverso parecchi colpi di scena, poco è dato per scontato. Davvero bello.

Il libro inviato da Amazon appartiene ad una "Rough Cut Edition", ciò significa che le pagine sono tagliate male. Nonostante il prezzo sia alto, come si addice ad una deluxe edition, la qualità è molto bassa a causa di queste pagine che fanno apparire il libro di bassa qualità. Ne sconsiglio l'acquisto, non tanto per il libro in sé quanto per la versione venduta da Amazon.

It is a story about black and white women in the American south before the Civil Rights Movement, or rather when the movement was just starting. Beautifully written, the story conveys how racial inequality in the USA was lived as the "normal" way of doing things. it conveys how it was somehow unnatural to question it but also how slowly some black women and some white ones started questioning it, seeing through colour, the humanity and the dignity of the person. A beautiful book, an easy read, the author manages to convey the pictures of the American south, the warm and heavy climate, the country side, the cotton fields....

Pensavo si trattasse di una storia vera, invece credo sia un mix tra esperienze personali e storie di vicinato o altro.
Comunque il libro racconta uno spaccato di vita incredibile, e parliamo di soli 50 anni fa.
Molto ben scritto, e molto interessante il punto di vista diverso ma in molti casi simile di 3 donne che si trovano a vivere nello stesso luogo e nello stesso tempo, ma che in realtà sono lontane anni luce grazie alla segregazione sociale degli anni 60 in Mississippi.

I really enjoyed this book, I felt as if I was there, I didn't want it to finish! I had briefly looked at it before and decided that it wasn't my type of book, so I was really surprised how much I enjoyed it.

A reality that I hope is never repeated in the present but I have seen something similar with Philippine maids in Greece. The story is so touching it really gets you involved in each persons' opinion and life story,the best and the worst of the maids characters not to mention the employees who seem to think they have the right to do and treat these people as they wish. I highly recommend this book in english as a previous reviewer says I really don't know how the southern American slang can be translated in another language. The reason I gave it four stars is simply on reading the first paragraph I thought it was full of errors only to realise it was intentional.I read english books to improve my english but this book could only make it worse!! However it didn't stop me from continuing and I'm so glad I did.
