Recensione

Praise for Julie James's About That Night:
"James' latest novel is ... filled with fast quips and chemistry that heats up the pages. Readers will love the back-and-forth between the main characters, but throughout the book the rest of the cast of characters and the story is a fantastic romantic comedy. This one would be great on the big screen."-RT BookReviews Magazine (Top Pick)
“ABOUT THAT NIGHT is Julie James’s best book to date! . . . It is utterly enchanting, sensual and fabulous. Julie James gives a robust voice to contemporary courtships! Amusing and sexy, Julie James's books are flirtatious temptations for every reader.”--Romance Junkies

3.0 su 5 stelle My Inner Skeptic Cringed 17 novembre 2013
Di Clio Reads - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
I had a really hard time tuning out my Inner Skeptic as I read this. Kyle and Rylann (pet peeve: characters with names I can't pronounce) met nine years ago at a bar in grad school. They made a date, but Kyle's mom died and he couldn't keep it. Somehow, they both still remember the night they met after all this time.

Fast forward to present day: Rylann is an ambitious federal prosecutor who has just relocated to Chicago after breaking up with the guy she thought she'd marry. She is organized and driven and likes to make Life Plans. Kyle is a computer genius who got dumped, got drunk, and hacked into Twitter, shutting it down for two days and breaking a slew of Federal laws. He's just been released from jail because his sister cooperated with the FBI in exchange for a reduction in his sentence... something Rylann says out loud in court during Kyle's re-sentencing hearing.

That's when my Inner Skeptic started to cringe. I'm a prosecutor, too, and when prosecutors say in open court, on the record, "So-and-so cooperated with the cops," So-and-so runs an unreasonably high risk of winding up dead. The identity of a cooperating witness would never be so cavalierly exposed.

The main romantic conflict between the couple is that, as a big shot Assistant U.S. Attorney, Rylann just can't date an ex-con, especially not a hacker ex-con like Kyle. And that's true: she can't. She'd lose the respect of her boss and coworkers, the cops and agents she works with, the defense attorneys she goes up against. She'd probably lose whatever security clearance she has as a Federal employee, and then she'd lose her job. Someone as driven and ambitious as Rylann would never, ever risk it... But of course she does, and of course the fallout is nothing like as bad as she'd feared, and they all live HAE.

Whatever.

32 year old Rylann Pierce recently moved back to Chicago to become the Assistant US Attorney. It has been six months since her boyfriend moved to Rome and failed to propose like she assumed he would. Her first case is United States vs. Kyle Rhodes. Nine years ago Rylann met the billionaire tech geek the night she finished her first year of law school. There were major sparks when he walked her home. Kyle convinced her to go out with him, but fate had other plans. 33 year old Kyle Rhodes just served four month of an eighteen month sentence in a federal prison for hacking Twitter and shutting it down for two days. His twin sister Jordan made a deal with the FBI to get him released early. Now he is stuck working with the US Attorney's Office. Kyle is shocked when he sees a familiar set of eyes in the courtroom. He remembers Rylann and her feisty attitude from all those years ago.

"There are some things a girl never forgets, Ry. And one of those is a kiss from the right guy."

Rylann never thought her path would cross with Kyle after securing his release from prison, but fate reared its ugly head again. Kyle could potentially be the only witness in a homicide. Rylann must ignore the feelings Kyle sparks in her. She is confused how they seem to fresh after nearly a decade. Kyle is now her witness so nothing can happen between them. Problem is Kyle will not be her witness forever.. What happens then? Will sparks turn into flames? Or will Rylann put her career before the chance at love?

"I will never, ever regret stopping you from walking out of my life a second time."

THE STORY: Almost a decade ago, Rylann Pierce and Kyle Rhodes met as graduate students. The next time they meet they are on opposite sides of a courtroom where Rylann is an Assistant US Attorney and Kyle is having his felony prison sentence reduced. Kyle is known as the Twitter Terrorist for his actions shutting down Twitter for two days after his girlfriend dumped him online. When Rylann and Kyle end up working together on another criminal investigation where Kyle is a witness, the two find much in common including an intense attraction. Rylann, however, knows that they have no future because a relationship with Kyle would torpedo her career.

OPINION: I loved this one. It was witty and clever and smart. Kyle and Rylann are smart people who talk to one another! I appreciate that Kyle has made mistakes and that he has to live with them and remake his life. It would have been easy to erase his past to make the happy ending easier, but instead, he has to struggle with his mistakes and forge a new future for himself. I like the depiction of Rylann as a career woman who is competent and smart and dedicated to making her own way. The fact that Rylann's career and Kyle's past create conflict makes the story interesting and grounded in reality. This was a book that encouraged page turning because the story was compelling and fast paced. The relationship between Rylann and Kyle is sexy and definitely of the hot variety! I especially liked this story because of the depth and complexity of the story between these two likeable characters.

WORTH MENTIONING: I especially liked in this book the serious look at Rylann's career and the necessity of her making decisions which foreclose other options for her. Often in similar books everything comes out rosy and easily. Here, difficult choices are acknowledged and made.

FINAL DECISION: Like prior Julie James' books, ABOUT THAT NIGHT is filled with witty banter, sarcastic humor and a fun attitude. I liked this one because there was more depth to the relationship and more personal difficulties for the characters to overcome.

CONNECTED BOOKS: ABOUT THAT NIGHT is the third book in the FBI/US Attorney series. The book can be read as a standalone.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

I have read all of Julie James' books and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. I couldn't wait to read this book and had pre-ordered it a few weeks back. This book held up to all the previous book's standard. I loved it! Book was well written, dialogue was sharp and witty. Banter between the characters was pretty funny! And even some of the character's internal dialogue were pretty amusing. You will find this book very entertaining, it is full of contemporary pop culture references that you can relate to. It is contemporary romance at its finest!

A quick summary about the book (since other reviewers have done this extensively) is about Kyle, who we met on the last book, and Rylann. Kyle met Rylan 9 years ago and hit it off one night. They shared a magical kiss and he literally gave her the shirt off his back. He asked her out on a date, but stood her up. They have not seen or talked to each other since then. Nine year later, their lives cross path again as Kyle finds himself a convict for shutting down Twitter and Rylann is the new US Assistant Attorney working the case in Chicago.

There are no major dramas, killings, mysteries to solve, etc, yet the plot for this book was extremely well thought out, written and told. I loved all the legal drama and you can definitely tell the author knows her stuff. This made the story fun and believable. I loved seeing some of the past characters from previous books, so it was fun to catch up with them. Romance was fun and sexy! This book reminded me of some of James' earlier books which I have loved. Julie James is an automatic buy for me and I can't wait for her to release something else! 6 stars if I could!

5.0 su 5 stelle Awesome contemporary romance! 6 aprile 2012

Julie James has done it again! "About that Night" is a GREAT book with great characters, funny dialogue, and an excellent story. I have enjoyed all of this author's previous books and I was highly anticipating this one, and it did not disappoint.

It starts off with a flashback of a flirtation nine years ago that didn't go anywhere due to certain circumstances. Now, in present day, Rylann and Kyle meet again, under peculiar and complicated circumstances. There is still the same spark and flirtation and it doesn't take too long until they can no longer resist each other. Kyle is clearly smitten with Rylann and falling fast. Rylann is attracted to Kyle, but worried about how dating an ex-con will affect her image and credibility in the US Attorney's Office. Some characters from previous books make appearances and the whole book is fun, and a pretty easy read...if I had the time to read it all in one day, I would have, but it took me about 3 days to finish.

So, by all means, read this book, as well as the other books by Julie James and be prepared to wish there was more to read after you finish. Some of them, including this one, include steamy sex scenes, which wasn't the case in her older books, but in my opinion, all of the books are delightfully charming and I love the way she writes modern, professional people with humor, thought, and intelligence.
