An Actor Walks into China tells of a thrilling transfer from Little Rock, Arkansas (think Wal-Mart, think Bill Clinton), to Beijing China, (think spicy food, think Shakespeare - or Sha Shi Bi Ya - as they say it there). From his first visit to Beijing where he played Kent in King Lear, to his experience directing an all female Julius Caesar with Chinese undergraduates - it seems so obvious doesn't it, surely just a question of who got there first? - to producing a season of Chinese theater in London, British actor Colin McPhillamy takes us on a ride of cultural confusion and delight. He loved China and the people he met. He loved the food, in personal encounters he met with warmth and hospitality. It was only in business environment that the shouting started.
Colin McPhillamy has acted on Broadway, off-Broadway, at The Royal National Theatre in London, in Scotland, in Sydney, Australia, and many places in between. His writing has been nominated for the Prix Italia, and the Writer's Guild Comedy Award.

laughs abound in a serious primer...

An Actor Walks into China takes the reader by the hand on a hilarious, yet absolutely accurate tour of transactions between people who may seem to be speaking the same language BUT... McPhillamy's book is rock-solid preparation for any American contemplating business with the Chinese...and that includes bankers, artists and entrepreneurs. People on both sides of the Chinese-American divide will find the laughs and get the point.
FUNNY IN SPOTS

I sort of enjoyed this, but I found it off-putting because the author would give information about occurrences that would have been very interesting, except the prologue stated that not all the information was factual. So instead of learning interesting facts, one is left wondering what is true and what is not.

A young friend of mine has done business in China. This book shows the aggravation of doing so in a very humorous manner. People who are in theater production will probably get a laugh--and a warning--out if it.
a great read

Nearly missed my station stop reading this marvelous book. If Bill Bryson, P.G. Wodehouse and Peter Ustinov collaborated on a book you'd get something like this! Mr.McPhillamy in an instant joins their remarkable company!
