5.0 su 5 stelle Perfect American Absurdism Play 22 maggio 2015
Di CaitlinsDadVP - Pubblicato su
Formato: Copertina flessibile
American Midget is one of the best new plays you'll find. Its sharp, brilliantly written, filled with twists and turns of language and phrase reminiscent of Beckett, but more wacky that are a joy to read and hear. The vicious and devious Mr. Much's pursuit of our hero Albert using his pawns to convince him he is a "little person" is a story that's both inspiring and depressing--and blurs the line between stage and audience in a fantastic way. Just when you think you know what's going on, it goes in a different direction and leaves you with your jaw hanging open. It's also riotously funny. From the hilarious monologue of a self-absorbed, talentless, sex-crazed college art professor, to the tragic tale of a psychiatrist who dreamed of being a high-wire artist, to the quick almost hip-hop style exchanges of two middle-school basketball captains picking teams. If you're looking to read or produce a play that is full of ridiculous characters but at the same time challenges conventional theatre and will entertain and intrigue audiences, you should read and produce AMERICAN MIDGET. It's a new classic.

Absurdisn in the theatre can be a hit and miss but American Midget is a welcome hit. Its collection of characters, including not-midget Albert and a girl who witnessed her father's suicide-by-stage-direction, are overseen by the mysterious fourth wall poking Mr. Much, who gives the proceedings shape and momentum. The play is a darkly funny look at the forces that hold us back in life, with wit and bite that keep it from ever getting preachy or obscure. A one-act, it ends when it needs to, without overstayong its welcome and packing a meaner punch as a result. Its small cast and modest staging requirements make it an excellent choice for schools and theatre companies looking for more adventurous fare. Highly recommended.
