Sinossi

A Top 10 Kindle Bestseller from a New York Times Bestselling Author!

London, 1666: Amethyst Goldsmith makes dazzling jewelry, but her future isn't nearly as bright as the pieces she creates. Though custom dictates she wed her father's apprentice, her heart rebels against the match. In mere days Amy will be condemned to a stifling, loveless marriage, and she sees no way out--until the devastating fire of 1666 sweeps through London, and tragedy lands her in the arms of a dashing nobleman who knows a diamond in the rough when he sees it...

Colin Chase, the Earl of Greystone, has his future all figured out. He's restoring his crumbling castle and estate to its former glory, and the key to its completion is his rich bride-to-be. But the Great Fire lays waste to his plans, saddling him with trouble--in the form of a lowly shopkeeper's daughter with whom he's most inconveniently falling in love...

Quando leggo un romanzo rosa storico non mi aspetto una fine ricostruzione, ma almeno una certa credibilità sì. In questo caso sembra di vedere due personaggi del tutto moderni calati in una realtà più o meno storica.

3.0 su 5 stelle Decent romance, but not fantastic. Review contains spoilers. 7 agosto 2015

I chose this as my beach read last week. I ended up not getting much reading done at the beach, though, so I only just finished it today! I picked it because it was the first unread book on my Kindle, and I'm trying to slowly get through all the books that I downloaded on it for free from Amazon. I had fairly low expectations for this one, and was pleasantly surprised by liking it more than I had expected.

I'll start with what I didn't like about this book. It definitely had both good and bad qualities, and I'd rather get the bad out of the way first so I can end on a good note. First, I noticed several spelling/grammatical errors as I was reading this. For example, "awkward" was spelled "akward" at one spot, and the word "dais" was repeatedly spelled "dias." The fact that this particular mistake occurred multiple times actually makes me wonder if this wasn't just a typo that went unobserved by the editor, but, rather, that the author simply doesn't know how to spell the word correctly... which would be pretty embarrassing for her, if that's the case. This is a book I got for free on Amazon, which would ordinarily make me wonder if the author were self-publishing, but she seems to be fairly established, which means there really is no excuse for mistakes like this.

On a similar note, the characters' speech too frequently jumped from attempts at historically accurate phrasing and modern jargon. The result was that the attempts at accuracy came across as forced and kind of cliche, and then the anachronistic speech - such as comparing a character's speed to that of a rocket - stood out even more than it ordinarily would. I really think that Ms. Royal should look into finding a better editor, as these errors could easily be ironed out by someone who's more thorough.

Also, while I generally liked the characters, I was at times irked by their incredible stupidity. The heroine, Amethyst "Amy" Goldsmith (by the way, could there be a cheesier name for a female jeweler? I think not) is a virgin at the beginning of the book and Royal decided to emphasize this by making her ridiculously naive. It also takes her way, way too long to reach fairly obvious conclusions, like realizing that Colin does, in fact, love her, and that sex does sometimes lead to pregnancy. Colin, too, is a bit slow at times, though not quite as bad as Amy is, and between the two of them, I found myself rolling my eyes pretty frequently. Some aspects of his personality, such as his love for pranks, also feel forced, rather than adding depth to his character.

All that aside, I did actually like this book. Amy and Colin are well-suited for each other and I enjoyed reading about how their relationship grows. I loved that they were surrounded by interesting supporting characters, though I would've liked to see more of some of them, especially Kendra.

I also greatly appreciated that, although this is a romance novel, there is more to the plot than romance. Amy and Colin's story goes beyond just seeing them get together; we actually get a pretty well fleshed out view of their life together. This is a refreshing shift from the "just get them together" approach that many romance novelists choose to follow. Additionally, Royal put a good bit of effort into showcasing the time period of this story. I've noticed that many historical romance authors throw their characters into a setting and then basically ignore what might be going on politically, focusing entirely on the romance between the characters. Royal actually integrates history into her story and I thought that this was fairly well done.

Overall, while I don't think that I like this book enough to re-read it, I did enjoy it and I do think that I'll be continuing the series, if only because I downloaded the rest of it for free as well. I'm pretty happy with how this story unfolded. It definitely had its flaws, but as far as romances go, I'd say this is a pretty good one!

4.0 su 5 stelle Great historical romance escape 1 marzo 2017
Di Cranky - The Book Curmudgeon - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

It's London, 1666, and King Charles the second has just been restored. Amethyst (Amy) Goldsmith attends the King's triumphant return with her father and the boy she's been betrothed to, Robert Stanley. A jeweler's daughter and talented artist, Amethyst has a chance encounter with a man on a horse that sets her heart fluttering.

Unbeknownst to Amy, he's Colin Chase, the Earl of Greystone. Colin comes from a large royalist family who's been dragged across Europe most of his formative years while the King was in exile. Colin's parents died fighting Cromwell and all he has left are his siblings and an earldom much in need of renovation.

Betrothed to a woman who is wealthy and can help restore his fortunes, Colin has complications when he meets Amethyst. The Great Fire of London further complicates matters by thrusting the care of Amethyst into his hands.

Amethyst is a merchant's daughter, lowly on the social scale, but talented in her own right. The chemistry between her and Colin simmers until it catches fire.

This year, I've been stepping outside my usual genres to read. I picked this book up on a whim and thoroughly enjoyed it. So much so that I'll follow on in the series to catch up with the wonderful cast of characters featured in this book.

Amethyst was engaging and easy to read. I read it in one sitting and was thoroughly engrossed in the lives between the pages.

I have to say this though: there was a lot of head hopping in this book. Sometimes, on the same page and in the same paragraph. If this could be cut out of this and future books, it would improve the read immensely.

Overall, recommended for a great historical romance romp to escape into.

4.0 su 5 stelle like a flower garden in spring blossomed into a multitude ... 18 ottobre 2016
Di Thomas Swennes - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

“Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Times is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today,
Tomorrow will be dying.”
Twelve years of Commonwealth rule under Oliver Cromwell and his son, comes to a joyful end when King Charles II returns from exile and is crowned king. With the return of the king, life in England emerged from the drab conditions dictated by the Commonwealth government and, like a flower garden in spring blossomed into a multitude of colors. Balls, music, art, expensive and colorful clothes, and beautiful jewelry are once more in demand. This was a hard time for everyone; physical and mental scars remain and have to be healed. Hundreds of castles, manor houses, and estates still lay in ruins after the bloody civil war that had ravaged England. Cromwell held to a scorched-earth policy, much like General Sherman’s March to the Sea, more than two hundred years later. Everyone supporting the king paid a dreadful price; no home, manor, castle, or keep was spared.
The family Goldsmith is aptly named as their stock in trade is jewelry. Passed on from one generation to the next, the Goldsmiths have built a good reputation for designing and producing beautiful jewelry. Amethyst (Amy) Goldsmith has learned the trade from her father and her vivid imagination and artistic talents make her designs particularly sought after.
On the eve of her upcoming nuptials with Robert Stanley, her father’s apprentice and a lifelong friend, she is fighting doubts that flood her head. Their union, as her father often pointed out, was prudent. It was a logical solution and would assure the contingency of the family business and legacy. Goldsmith & Sons had been around for generations and, even though she was an only child and a girl, through her sons could be born to give the sign credence. Love wasn’t in the equation and this she surely missed.

Lord Colin Chase, Earl Greystone, was in much the same situation. As second son of a staunch supporter of King Charles I, he was dragged all over the continent, following the king’s exiled son. Charles II. Now, back in England, he has to rebuild his home, Greystone Castle and replenish his fortune. The fast and surest way to accomplish this goal is to marry into money, and that is what he plans to do.
A chance meeting and an unspeakable tragedy changes everything……..
Suffering from equinophobia (or hippophobia, if you prefer), Amy’s trials and tribulations while seated on a horse, had me laughing out loud as the picture played in my mind. This historical romance consists of many facets and is truly a gem the highest quality.

This story is my introduction to Lauren Royal and apparently her beginning to published literature. The story pleased me very much. She combines historical people and events, to create a gripping tale, incorporating all the essential elements. Her prose brings the past to life. I can smell the bouquet of the summer fields and flowers. I can detect the stench if the fires and the stink of the open sewers of London. The essence of a woman’s scent and a trace of a clean manly odor play on my senses.
Equal to works of John Jakes and Edward Rutherfurd, with a delicate female touch, she relates a story true to its time. Love and life spring from every page. This author richly deserves all laurels heaped upon her by the literary critics. This is the first book in the Chase series. I guarantee you I will devour the rest.

3.0 su 5 stelle Good romance, but a bit long 5 marzo 2017
Di Sandra - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
This is a good romance for the most part, but it is a bit drawn out. It seemed like there was a lot of unnecessary sections included, which made the book just too long. Much of the story could have been condensed quite a bit, especially after they got together, which would have made it a more enjoyable read.

I did find the H a bit annoying at times, with his determination to never fall in love. His single-minded insistence on that almost lost him a great love, but he did change before that happened. For the most part, this is an entertaining read -- but it just needed to be condensed.

Now I must disagree strongly with one reviewer, who felt that Amethyst's betrothed was poorly treated. The man was a menace -- he thinks he is owed her inheritance simply because he was betrothed to her and worked for her father, plans to stop her from working as a jeweler when they marry, abducts her to force her to marry him, hits her, and tries to rape her -- He does NOT deserve any sympathy.

Overall, I would give this book 3.5 stars, but since I thought it was too long and drawn out -- that rating is reduced to 3 stars.
