5.0 su 5 stelle Kids learn Musicals!!! 21 giugno 2016

Every summer, my daughters and I explore one or two musicals. This summer we're focusing on two and one of those is Annie. This soundtrack helps them learn the song as we play it in the car endlessly. The item arrived on time and in mint condition as expected. It is a great recording of the Broadway Production. We have watched the 1982 version made for television and this version of the music is quite similar but not exact and I like that. I want them to hear Broadway performances with the pitch and range of the artists as well as the orchestral arrangements that accompany. Listening to the musical in the car gives us to talk about the story line and how it is conveyed through the music and song. It helps that they've seen the musical movie version and can remember the story line, but they are rapidly gaining an appreciation for how subtlety in music can be used to express emotions.

I have had a major soft spot in my heart for ANNIE since seeing a local stage production of it nearly thirty years ago. With its poignant yet funny libretto and tuneful score, ANNIE became a smash hit during the 1977-1978 Broadway season, and since that time there have been a couple of other recordings of the show; these include the soundtrack of the 1982 movie adaptation and a revival-cast recording. For me the 1977 original Broadway cast recording is a must-have for several reasons. First, it preserves the Annie of Andrea McArdle, whose young-girl belting voice became the prototypical sound for the role. Second, it preserves the original orchestrations of Philip J. Lang, which are wonderfully evocative of the 1930's when the musical is set (listen, for example, to the low-down jazz arrangement of "Easy Street") and often heartbreaking (e.g. the tender violin part in "Maybe"). And thirdly, it preserves the performances of three cast members -- Dorothy Loudon as Miss Hannigan, Raymond Thorne as President Franklin Roosevelt, and the silver-voiced Laurie Beechman as the "Star to Be" (among other supposed "bit" roles) -- that I don't feel could ever be surpassed. Donald Craig in one of the score's catchiest songs, "You're Never Fully Dressed without a Smile," sounds just like a 1930's radio singer, while Sandy Faison's bell-like soprano makes you wish Grace Farrell had been given a solo. If Reid Shelton as Daddy Warbucks does not sing quite as well as a couple of others I have heard in the part, there is no poor singing on the album, and the ensemble work in numbers like "NYC" and "You Won't Be an Orphan for Long" is especially strong. If you love ANNIE as I do, then the original Broadway cast recording is one you should not be without.

5.0 su 5 stelle essential cast album 18 febbraio 2010

First up, this is the identical disc to the previous 1998 Broadway Masterworks pressing, but in new, cardboard "eco-pack" sleeve packaging. Affectionately nicknamed "The Red Album", the 1977 original Broadway cast recording of ANNIE has never been out of the catalogue, enjoying steady sales for the past thirty years.

Andrea McArdle is still the definitive Annie for most fans, belting out her signature "Tomorrow" with all the confidence of a seasoned Broadway veteran; though in fact this was her Broadway debut and she had only won the role after the little girl originally cast as Annie was deemed "unsatisfactory" during early tryouts. It's a hard knock life!

Dorothy Loudon is a hoot and a half playing the addled orphanage owner Miss Hannigan, Reid Shelton (whose credits date back to the chorus of the original 1956 "My Fair Lady") is a consummate Warbucks; and the late, great Laurie Beechman belts it like nobody's business as the Star to Be in the "N.Y.C." sequence.

Listening to the album today, you can still pick up on the sense of triumph and excitememt within the performances, and the spicy orchestrations of Philip J. Lang positively SCREAM Old-School Broadway (if you don't get chills during the Overture, you are definitely missing something). ANNIE was one of the last great "all-American" Broadway musicals before the British invasion took Broadway into a totally new direction in the early Eighties. It still holds a warm, nostalgic spell for audiences all over. Recommended.

5.0 su 5 stelle Just a really good musical score! 2 aprile 2014
Di Richard B. Green - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

This new presentation of the original Broadway score of "Annie" includes, at recording's end, several songs that were not included in the show, presented by the songwriters. In a way, I could have done without them. But "Annie" is a wonderful score. I had the good
fortune to see all of these fine performers in preview back in the middle 70's. It couldn't have been a more delightful several hours. I hated the movie version, feeling it was ruined by Carol Burnett, who made such an ugly drunk of Miss Hannigan. In comparison, Dorothy Loudon walked that fine line between being loved and hated by the audience, receiving at curtain call a thunderous ovation. Kathy Bates, in a television version that was quite nice, did the same.

We are enjoying the extra bits on the end that are "outtakes" - parts of the story that did not make it into the play, or the original album that I wore out in 1977.
