This book is for any person who wishes to have clearer functioning of his or her mind and not to be bogged down with useless thinking. Within three weeks the result will be more control over thoughts, better concentration, more energy, more joy, happiness and appreciation for life. This is a simple and straightforward self-help book approached from two different and yet related perspectives.
The first is about correcting breathing volume using a physician-developed programme known as the Buteyko Breathing Method. Chronic overbreathing is a habit present with any person who experiences stress, anxiety, panic attacks and depression. It causes both a constriction of blood vessels and reduced delivery of oxygen to tissues and organs, most notably the brain. The Buteyko Method is a simple approach that significantly improves oxygenation of the brain, resulting in far less brain cell excitability.
The second aspect deals with recognising the activity of the mind, the nature of thought and how to step out of thought. This too is essential to understanding your mind and taking control.
The mind is regarded as the most important capability of the human species. Yet, most people have little control over it as it races from thought to thought. Mind activity, stress, depression and anxiety are nothing more than the absence of control. How much control do you have over your mind? For how long can you choose to stop thinking?
A quiet mind is one that you have control over. Quite simply, you can choose to think or not to think. You don't get lost in trains of useless thinking. Most of the time, you know what is taking place. Without control over our minds, we have nothing. It is the one part of us that determines our quality of life on earth, yet it receives little attention from our educational, religious and medical institutions. How insane is that?
If only you had a chance to look inside people's minds, you would see the same turmoil that goes on in your own head. Hidden behind the nice white smile is fear of the future and regrets from the past. A racing and repetitive mind is just below the surface. It might not have reached the depths that someone in depression has reached, but at the same time, you will see common traits. In fact, all of us are just a few stressful events away from mental problems. Cumulative stressful events take their toll on everybody unless, of course, we have some understanding of thought processes and can better oxygenate our brain.
In our sophisticated Western world with its emphasis on intelligence and the stigma on mental problems, normal healthy people who go through periods of being down or depressed have few outlets through which to seek help. Addressing this deficit early on is the key to reversing it.
My interest in this area stems from having both asthma and a racing mind for many years. By using the Buteyko Method to reverse my asthma and by improving my awareness, I also addressed my racing mind. Thousands have attended my courses in Ireland and abroad for asthma and other conditions. Those who have attended for panic attacks, depression, stress and anxiety have reported very good feedback; hence, this book.
This book can be read by someone with poor concentration, or a clouded and depressed mind. It contains nothing complicated and through constant repetition, the reader can apply the guidance provided here to his or her own life. The result is lightness and a major lift in mood.

The book is an excellent description of how to apply the Buteyko Method and mindfulness for anxiety and a worrying mind. Written with simple language in larger text and supported by high quality illustrations.
My goal was to identify with the reader who is at the mercy of their own mind resulting in constant thinking, worrying, poor energy levels and concentration.

5.0 su 5 stelle Seriously Life Changing 13 giugno 2015
Di Keola - Pubblicato su

As someone who has experienced anxiety, weak concentration, IBS, multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) and the beginnings of sleep apnea, as well as being clinically diagnosed with autoimmune disease (Lupus and Sjogren's), the Buteyko Breathing Method has filled another important piece to my complex health puzzle. After much research, there is no doubt in my mind that over-breathing is correlated with most ill health, and it is most certainly a part of the matrix of what has been mine.

Still, while I was aware of and making efforts to incorporate Buteko breathing into my protocol for the past six months, it was this book and CD, which afforded me my first true positive results.

Changing your breathing pattern by reducing your breath can be quite challenging. Especially since the very changes we are making through the Buteyko method can initially provoke anxiousness. Since I am attempting to quell the release of excess stress hormones, this is not beneficial. My attempts at Buteyko before this book and CD mostly created overwhelm and defeat. I eventually put my efforts aside.

Enter Patrick McKeown. I first heard him interviewed on this podcast: Primal Diet-Modern Health with Beverly Meyer. I was taken by his gentle Irish manner and tremendous clinical success teaching the Buteyko Breathing Method worldwide.

"Anxiety Free - Stop Worrying and Quieten Your Mind" was my personal choice because Beverly so highly recommended the accompanying CD and because of my own hierarchy of symptoms. I am sure any one of his titles is equally a great choice.

The book had me at this Oscar Wilde quote on the first page: "thinking is the most unhealthy thing in the world, and people die of it just as they die of any other disease".

Patrick became the right teacher, with the right way into the Buteyko method for me. His demeanor is persistently gentle and encouraging and it immediately made me feel confident that I will succeed. It is notable, that while I have a regular practice of yoga and mindfulness for over 20 years now, this meditation CD has become one of my most useful tools ever. Meanwhile, the book itself instructs and encourages me to keep at my efforts and to bite off a little more, as I feel fit.

Small but noticeable gains are coming weekly through my persistence. I mostly notice a deeper sense of calm and observe my breath is quiet and smoother at those times. My CP is going up, but very slowly. All this is giving me confidence that I CAN progressively secure greater wellbeing by correcting my most primary function: a life sustaining breathing pattern.

Please don't wait to order this book and CD to get started. It is the most loving and empowering thing you can do to help yourself.

Peace and well wishes to us all!

(Just to note, even before the Buteko Breathing Method, this is my healing lifestyle profile:
I ascribe to a nutritionally dense, gut healing, anti-inflammatory diet, maintain a dedicated primal-wise lifestyle, practice Iyengar Yoga daily and live a kind, simple, mindful life.)

Thank you.🌺

5.0 su 5 stelle Not only a great book, but the relaxation CD is best I've heard 15 luglio 2013

I stumbled across the Buteyko method a while ago online, and although I do not have asthma, I found out that it worked for anxiety, too. I bought Patrick's book, and when I received the book, I sort of forgot about the CD which came with the book. I thought that it just showed how to do the reduced breathing technique. Then as I read the book, it mentioned the CD, and thought I should check it out. It turned out, it was for relaxation and the reduced breathing exercise. Because of my anxiety issue, I had accumulated with a dozen or more of "relaxation" CDs, and I'd checked out many more that I ended up not buying after listening to the samples.

The CD that Patrick created is the best that I've heard so far. His voice and the way he speaks are without any kind of mannerism - just straight, simple, and warm, himself. I have been a musician for many years, and music on relaxation CDs can be very hard for me to deal with, as it is often more destructive than soothing. The background music on this CD is very simple and beautiful at the same time. Very simple piano music without any over-emotional tone. Later on, you notice drone sound by either the keys or violin, which is also without any "New Age-tone." I listen to this CD 3-4 times a day now, as it really works for me to start to relax, and calm my breathing completely. Besides the breathing technique, the latter part of the book that talks about anxiety and mindfulness is very helpful in terms of how to step out of your repetitive thinking. It makes me want to read over and over again.

I'm only at the beginning of week 2 at this, but I want to recommend this book and the CD to anyone who wants to learn to relax, step out of your thinking, and learn to breathe more effectively.

I had known my breathing was suboptimal, and I frequently engaged in "deep breathing" exercises. Reading this book was an epiphany: not only do I now understand that (and why) I was doing everything wrong in the past, but the autobiographical journey that led him to Buteyko described by the author in the last chapters totally hit home for me. His own symptoms mirrored mine to a T - it was eerily similar. Fortunately for the author, he discovered this method 10 years before I did.... After paying attention to my breathing, using breathing strips at night, and doing breathing exercises with long exhalations, I am already beginning to feel benefits just after a few days. No stuffy nose, and much more energy during the day. I had literally hyperventilated my energy and health away in the last 10 years. I am so glad I discovered this little book!

Absolutely love this book , I have read it over and over again to help me overcome my Anxiety, so easy to read. And finally after 2 years of suffering I feel has though I have my life back .
Its not been easy , and it does need commitment but it is worth it , I found doing the breath olds and keeping my mouth closed worked for me at the beginning and now Its easier to do the reduced breathing exercise . My cp has gone from 8 to 20 and I love the feeling of how I feel, so much calmer and happier I want it to get to 40 that's my goal .
Seriously my anxiety was that bad I was having pains in chest ,I felt has though I couldn't breath and also sleepless nights , now its all gone . My doctor told me it was my age has I am coming to the menopausal stage of my life 46yrs. I have tried everything diets and herbal supplements and none have worked
I also have been learning and reading about mindful meditation by Jon Kabat -Zinn , I have found this very good and helps tremendously to calm your body and the way you think .
I have tried many things for my anxiety and I am so glad I found out about Dr Buteyko on YouTube.

Commitment from you is what is needed and if you want to feel well again this is what you have to do. like I said earlier it is not easy but it does get easier because your training your brain through repetition

I am only three days into this way of thinking/living/breathing but I can say this short volume has thus far changed my life. I've struggled with panic and anxiety for years with no solution. No doctor ever asked, "Hey, do you think you might be hyperventilating? Could that be what is causing your dizziness, lightheadedness, fatigue, anxiety, and more?" No one ever asked. They gave me pills and looked at me like I was crazy. The Buteyko breathing method is counterintuitive (breathe less, not more!) so it takes some getting used to, but it makes a huge difference for those of us who anxiously gulp in air when we're not even aware of it. The second half of the book is also excellent. (Yes, there are a couple of typos but who really cares in the grand scheme of things!) I really loved the author's likening the mind to a frantic "right arm;" this made more sense to me than a ton of other self-help books. I want to check in again 3 weeks from now to report the results but for now, thank you, thank you, to this author for publishing this book.
