In the Araminta Trilogy you can find all that made Vance so great: action, nice characters and storyline, and most of all a universe with many strange and baroque societies. A must read

Jack Vance is my favorite science fiction author. Here he's at the height of his powers. A masterful storyteller, he weaves a great tale of adventure and excitement, with a whimsical sense of humor. He conjures worlds of intriguing characters and cultures. He is also a keen observer of the human condition. This is a wonderful series.

You just can't go wrong with Jack Vance, especially in his mid to late career, where he had perfected his uniquely whimsical and intelligent narrative style. There is no writer who can possibly emulate him, I personally consider him to be one of the best writers of all time, and most people have never heard of him! The quality of the writing in this book is just jaw dropping at times. It flows, it just flows as smooth as butter. Araminta is a beautiful place, ever been there?
It is a rare thing to get to the end of a page in a book and find yourself dumbfounded, thinking to yourself "What have I just read? How does he do it?" Well, that happened to me several times while reading this book. I shouldn't be surprised, this is Jack Vance we're talking about here. Vivid and evocative imagery, beautifully dynamic dialogue and an intelligent, hard hitting plot that unfolds at a steady yet unrelenting pace. Though it is ultimately a detective thriller story, I found myself enjoying its quiet and more reflective moments most of all. That, I think, makes it much more than "just another sci-fi novel." A special book from a very special author, time to get stuck into Ecce and Old Earth!

excellent book by Jack Vance, which i'm still reading.....his usual high quality writing about strange people in strange places doing the usual human things....basically a "coming of age" story mixed in with politics, and inter-species unease....

Another extraordinary world-building story with startliing backdrops, adventure, action, murder, intrigue, wordsmithery, and mellifluous pacing. Jack Vance's eclectic verbiage and poetic storylines are magical, captivating, and addictive. It's no wonder he is one of the world's most revered and awarded authors in the sci/fi fantasy/adventure genres. Another masterpiece from one of America's literary treasures!
