Sinossi

A COMING OF AGE SAGA READERS ARE COMPARING TO HARRY POTTER, WHEEL OF TIME, AND ERAGON. A TALE OF MAGIC, AMBITION, BETRAYAL . . . AND COMPASSION.

Fourteen-year-old Augum grew up with bullies instead of friends. In a kingdom where superstition trumped the written word, he fought loneliness by reading books and doing hard labor. It was a typical life for a gutter-born orphan.

An inferno changes everything. And Augum, having lost it all, begins again. He finds a mentor and even befriends Bridget and Leera, two passionate and quirky girls willing to give him a chance. Together they dream of becoming warlocks.

But Augum's mentor possesses an ancient and highly sought-after artifact. When an ambitious tyrant suddenly turns up demanding it, Augum resists--and discovers something about himself that changes the course of history. As the tyrant plunges them into a harrowing ordeal, Augum will have to use his newly-acquired warlock skills to try to save the only thing he has left . . . a friendship forged in fire.

4.0 su 5 stelle Fabulous fantasy series regardless of your age! 20 settembre 2016
Di Laurie Allen - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
This is Sever Bronny's first novel, and I am impressed. There were a few minor editing errors, but they didn't detract at all from the story. Overall, this is a well-written book, and I expect Mr. Bronny's writing will continue to evolve and to delight readers.

Arcane is a coming-of-age sword-and-sorcery fantasy. The main characters (one boy, two girls) are 14-year-old magic users-in-training, but the writing, plot, and story are mature enough to appeal to anyone (I'm 47, and an avid fantasy reader). There is minimal cursing, but the story is not pollyanna-ish, which surprised me. I know that others have summarized the plot well enough that I don't need to rehash it. For me, it was kind of a Harry Potter/Eragon/The Wheel of Time. There's rarely a dull moment; it has lots of action and dialogue that keep moving the story forward.

I'm now about halfway through Book 2 ("Riven"), and am still loving the characters--their friendships, their travails, their lack of perfection, their humor, and their poignancy. I read reviews for books 2, 3, and 4, and they remain high, so I fully expect I'll finish the series. (Mr. Bronny plans for this series to be 5 books long.)

I highly recommend this book. I think it's appropriate for readers as young as maybe 10-12 years old (my kids are older now, so I'm trying to remember what level of writing they appreciated at what age...). And it's definitely appropriate for adults as well. There's no silly-assed, off-putting teen angst, just well-developed characters who happen to be 14, learning to "adult" fast in a scary and deadly world.

5.0 su 5 stelle An Amazing Adventure! 27 dicembre 2014
Di Terry Juell - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Formato Kindle Acquisto verificato
This is an adventure that starts building right from the very first pages. The author gives a detailed base of the characters which is essential to the adventurous plot and provides the reader all the information they need to care for the main characters. The plot builds as the story moves along making the reader unable to put the book down. After the detailed beginning the book moves along with twists and turns that are very unsuspected. The characters grow stronger and the plot thickens which both keep the reader glued to the pages to find out what happens next. At about half way through the book I found the pace quicken and myself unable to let go. I am by no means experienced with writing reviews and apologize if I don't make sense. All in all I think Mr. Bronny does an excellent job with this first book. I think it deserves 5 stars and I cannot wait to read book 2! I dare say this is an amazing read! Please bring on book 2!!!

4.0 su 5 stelle Technically sound, excellent storyline, Arcane succeeds, giving you exactly what you asked for 27 novembre 2014

There's a fine line between writing books about kids, and writing books for kids. The prevalence of the "pop fiction" genre with titles like Harry Potter, and the The Hunger Games and Divergent trilogies means the middle grade scene has become mainstream. Along with that comes increased scrutiny, no longer are you writing books for kids about kids, but you're straddling that fine line between commercial fiction, literary novels and Hollywood entertainment. You can't write below your audience, given the age range of the average reader of these books is now somewhere between 8 and 80. Let's be honest, it's a tough game out there and there's a lot of poor attempts looking to cash in on the hype surrounding these franchises. Everyone wants to write the next Harry Potter or Hunger Games, but nobody realizes there's only ever going to be one Harry Potter or Hunger Games.

With that in mind we have Arcane, the first in what will be many books in a series of fantasy adventure storytelling, set somewhere between Game of Thrones, Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Lord of the Rings. We have Augum, our protagonist, who not only serves as the catalyst for the story, but represents the everyman hero, in the form of a young boy. Bronny's first test is to make sure Augum is not caricature, or your typical angsty teen who is struggling to become a man, being pushed into lockers and pining for the girl in class who doesn't even seem to notice he exists. Bronny succeeds, he gives Augum a playful edge, he's smart, but stubborn, he's valiant but flawed, he's mature but childish. He's full-blooded, realistic, which is hard to come by in the fantasy genre.

Bronny's Solia is equally vibrant and beautifully flawed. He's created a kingdom under siege, given Augum a crafty, take no crap mentor in Anna Atticus Stone, and set him on a journey with his friends, all of whom bring their own flavour to the story. Where he gets you hooked is that nothing seems forced, the plot rolls out naturally, and the magic and sorcery have merit and a quality base of believability. Arcane is easy to get into, and even easier to fall in love with. Bronny's writing is accessible but never childish. Also, as a fellow small time writer, I hate him, because technically, he's flawless. This could be attributed to his background in music, and the technical prowess needed to master multiple instruments, musical programs and turn it all into one cohesive sound. Other writers spend years of post-secondary education trying to get to where he is when it comes to form and structure, and for him it seems to come so naturally, so yeah Bronny, if you're reading this, screw you, you owe me four years of college tuition on how to write good stuff.

Arcane is excellent, plain and simple. Here's hoping the internet does this guy some justice and elevates this hidden gem above the masses, because he deserves a bigger readership than most of the middle grad fodder out there right now.

I loved meeting Augum and his friends and watching them begin their journey into a very special world, one of spells and arcane wonders. The hero, Augum, is smart, humble, endearing and--you just know!--destined for great adventures.

Arcane is a very intriguing story, well written, and beautifully conceived. A super entertaining book.

5.0 su 5 stelle It probably started with Bunicula - this love of fantasy and scifi 13 dicembre 2014
Di John Andrew Mildon - Pubblicato su Amazon.com

I want to set out my own credential for wriiting a review of this book. It probably started with Bunicula - this love of fantasy and scifi. By the time I was 14 I think I had read everything Peirs Anthony ever wrote and followed his passions and those of others into the classics like Burroughs. In recent years, my tendencies have been toward what often is called "teen fiction" or young adult. It seems like it is not only that this is where the market is - but, quite frankly, its where the rousing good yarns still are. And Arcance falls right into this sweet spot.

Bronny isn't worried about plumbing the complexities of post-modernism. This is straight up adventure with a new twist on the functioning of magic with classic elements of dungeon adventuring and group dynamics rolled in (with a light and smart touch). Bronny's Augum and his friends are portrayed as realistically traumatized by the violence they witness, without the gruesome detail, but they arre resilient and strong - like children and heroes. Its a pitch-perfect and will be a holiday reading pleasure for adults and teens alike. Do yourself or your kid a favour and buy this book.
