Lena is a female drug dealer. Noah is a police detective trying to solve a murder case to which Lena is the only witness. Thing is, she can't remember a thing, and her life is too much of a mess for her to care. He cares, though. A bit too much. Enough to think that he can save himself by saving her.

But the streets always claim what's theirs.

5.0 su 5 stelle Brilliant, Original Crime Fiction Love Story 15 maggio 2013
Di Stacey Cochran - Pubblicato su

Astrid Artistikem Cruz's "At the Corner of Mars and Neptune" is a brilliant gem of a story constructed in a funky first-person present pov style that I found original, authentic, and engaging. The story centers around Lena, a drug addict, who is either witness to or the cause of a murder, and the subsequent investigation by police detective Noah who finds himself caring a bit too much for Lena and may be losing his objective professional view of the crime.

The story reminds me of the pulpy crime fiction of David Goodis, Jim Thompson, and early George Pelecanos. The narrative voice is unreliable, drug-addled, slangy, and filled with wit, and as a result keeps you on your toes as a reader. This kind of storytelling comes from a lot of practice and a lot of talent.

Would love to see more of Cruz's native Puerto Rico and Caribbean influences in her storytelling. Other than that, there is very little not to like here. Definitely recommended for crime fiction fans who love quirky, original stories haunted with loss, love, and the ever-receding hope of redemption.
5.0 su 5 stelle Short, sweet, anything but simple 21 aprile 2014

I loved it! I started reading it because I knew it was a short story and I figured I could read half before going to sleep and half with my morning OJ because I wasn't feeling like reading something that will keep me up all night and boy was I wrong. It might be short, but believe me you won't be able to put it down until the very last word (at 1:29am to be exact). I loved the main character, a very strong female lead that doesn't make you feel like she isn't real, you can totally relate to her (if you were in her situation, that is). It's a love story, but not with the mushy stuff that makes things boring and icky, it goes straight to the point (it's a short story after all) but it does so in such a way that doesn't leave you hanging like some writers that jump from point A to C without even acknowledging what happened with B.
Short, sweet and great to read. You won't regret it.
4.0 su 5 stelle A solid neo-noir love story. 13 aprile 2014

Astrid Cruz's short story, "At the Corner of Mars and Neptune," centers around street-smart Lena, witness to a murder, and Noah, the police detective in charge of investigating the crime. These star-crossed souls are about to learn that the street always claims its own, and that sometimes escape is simply not in the cards.

The story echoes the style set forth in Cruz's Caregiver series: fast-paced, sharp-tongued prose that cuts like a knife. It's a pulpy, neo-noir tale told through the eyes of a somewhat unreliable--and entirely heartbreaking--narrator. Any fan of crime and noir fiction will enjoy this fresh approach.
5.0 su 5 stelle Grabs you and doesn't let go 16 maggio 2013

A breathless read. The little white space at the end of each chapter mercifully lets you gulp a quick but incomplete breath before plunging you into the next chapter. You don't dare stop reading, don't dare breathe, the story grabs you by the throat like the big sweaty hand of the bully del barrio. Like a space-time anomaly that suddenly without warning plants you inside the character's skull where you experience everything she does.

I loved it.
5.0 su 5 stelle Impressive. 18 marzo 2015

At the Corner of Mars and Neptune by Astrid ‘Artistikem’ Cruz is a lethal cocktail of hard-boiled crime fiction, doomed romanticism, noir, dystopian fiction and politics. Both lyrical and hard-hitting, this short, sharp novelette packs more punch than many novels. Impressive stuff.
