When it happens to Lee, he buys a luxury RV to travel across the states with his best friend. A successful author who no longer needs his retirement savings, money is of no object to him now. Things get even better when the friends meet up with two attractive women their age, and it becomes a couple's journey.
Touring, eating, getting drunk, and making love as they travel to famous American sights, everything seems nice for a time. But then Lee starts to see strange visions. Visions of a monster following them across the country. Is he just hallucinating it, or is it real?

Realizing that he optimistically has only a year at most left to live, he opts to cash in his assets, buy a state-of-the-art RV and tour America with his best friend, Ben, picking up a couple of curvaceous and very beautiful hitchhikers on the way.
The foursome pair off, and the book begins to feel like a typical road trip and an advertisement for all of the great tourist spots in the US, which is no bad thing, because it does indeed make the reader want to grab their passport and hop on a 'plane!
What Lee doesn't tell his fellow travellers is that he has begun to have hallucinations, or so he thinks.
Dogged by the "hallucination" in the form of a scarlet demon, the reader witnesses Lee's deterioration, both physically and mentally as his sleeplessness gets worse and he begins to doubt his sanity increasingly so - until the others begin to see the demon too.
At nearly 400 pages, it's quite a lengthy book, but as I reached the end, I felt that Matthew Blake had pulled his punches with the ending somewhat, and rather than being able to say it was a great book, I can only say that it was a good book, yet I still urge others to give the book a good read through.

And unfold it does, in a sly, gradual way, with periods of seeming normalness counterpoised by elements of high strangeness. The underlying motif of the rare insomnia based disease is inspired - it allows you to speculate throughout the book as to whether this will go the traditonal horror route or segue into a strange psychological twist. Either way, you're in for a hell of a ride, possibly literally!
You feel for the protagonist as he struggles to believe his experiences are hallucinations, rather than real, while all the while his insomnia and fear build up in him making such belief incrementally more difficult to sustain.
I thought as I read this that I could imagine it as a film - his descriptions are full of clear imagery and his dialogue flows freely and realistically.
This is a promising start to a new horror author's career and a thoroughly enjoyable read.

There were a few questions I had at the end that were not resolved in the book, and that is why I took a star away. If you are interested in a mild horror story, you could do worse than this.
