5.0 su 5 stelle love, life, and a bit of magic 4 maggio 2015
Di Maria Haskins - Pubblicato su Amazon.com
Formato: Copertina flessibile Acquisto verificato
The six stories in Far Away In Time are well-written, softly flowing tales about people in both ordinary and extraordinary circumstances. Each character is well-crafted and believable, and the way the stories are told you are drawn into their thoughts, their world, their experience. There is tragedy and loss, love, sadness, the tragedy of a romance that never got a chance to happen, and even a touch of magic – all of it told with Savva’s gentle narrative voice and seen through her perceptive storyteller’s lens. And I love how she mixes the very real with a bit of fantasy, suggesting that the world we live in isn’t always as predictable and logical as we sometimes believe.

In short, Far Away In Time is a great read, and I will definitely be looking for more books by Maria Savva.

8 Short Stories: "Far Away In Time" by Maria Savva
I want to tell you something about every story, that would give to much away. I really enjoyed all the stories, the characters played their rolls well. In one story the author tells how important reviews are, wether it be for products, books, services etc. I'm partial to 2&3, they intertwine, just loved Mr Silverfrost, the plot was well thought out. Some stories made me sad, while some kept me on my toes, the greed in one story made me mad. A well written book of short stories. I would have liked the greed story to tell me how people reacted after the character, well read the story and see for yourself.

5.0 su 5 stelle Another excellent collection of short stories! 10 aprile 2014

I suspect that if you follow my reviews, you will know that I am a fan of Maria Savva. I particularly enjoy her short stories and her latest collection,Far Away In Time did not disappoint.

Many of the tales are darker than those found in previous works by Ms Savva, but they are all gripping and so well-written, that they draw you in quickly. Several of the stories are tragic: “The Ghost of Christmas Past” and “Tragedy of Love” are both so sad. “Betrayal”, telling of Desiree’s rejection by her father and step-mother, aroused feelings of anger towards this callous pair. I am sure that there will be several readers who will be able to identify with Charlene’s predicament in “Echoes of her Dreams”, as she allows her own dreams - and needs - to be trampled on.

I enjoyed the magical realism of the two parts to “Far Away in Time” and also “A Sign”, which looks at the question of whether or not the dead can send signs to the living. In my opinion, the spookiest story in the collection is “The Beach”.

I cannot pick out my favourite story, because they all have something good to offer. They certainly made me think about some of the issues that many people experience at some time in their lives. If you haven’t read any short stories by this author, this is a good place to start; I would say that there is something for everyone in “Far Away in Time.”

4.0 su 5 stelle a lovely collection of shorts - a real mixed bag - from the magical to the criminal 16 marzo 2014

I'd read quite a few of Maria Savva's books before and enjoyed in particular Haunted and Coincidences. However, as I don't term myself a short story fan, I was pleasantly surprised to discover I really enjoyed all of these stories, except the first one, The Ghost of Christmas Past - not that it wasn't well-written - it was - I simply found it too disturbing. My favourite was the eponymous Far Away In Time, which came in two parts. The main character was beginning to doubt her sanity, but it was all about everything not being quite what it seemed. She followed the instructions of an old man from her past and managed to inadvertently help prevent a crime from being committed, as she had faith. I loathed with a vengeance the father and stepmother in Betrayal, although I felt sorry for Desiree and the children, and was glad to see that the back-stabbing, selfish gits got their comeuppance. I both felt sorry for the mother in Echoes Of Her Dreams, as well as feeling exasperated at her that she let everyone walk all over her, particularly her sister. She was so eager to please, or never say no to anyone, that her life never really took off. In A Sign, Grace uncovers an object which helps bring joy to an elderly neighbour whilst also questioning the afterlife. A sweet, blossoming romance adds another dimension to the story. Tragedy of Love was just that - so sad. I could completely imagine this having happened at some point - what a waste; a very poignant tale. Mike and Toyah's tale in The Beach had an otherworldliness to it; Mike's dreams seemed so real and the content concerned him and with good reason it seemed. There's something in this collection for everyone

4.0 su 5 stelle Far and away a good collection 13 aprile 2014

Maria Savva has released a new collection of short stories, Far Away in Time. I have enjoyed her previous collections, Love and Loyalty, and more recently, 3. Some of the tales in Far Away in Time are of a somewhat darker nature, which appeals to me; the opener, The Ghost of Christmas Past, paves the way. Roland recalls a tragedy which occurred at that special time of year, and of how the subsequent guilt has changed his life. This bleak but thought-provoking story is followed by Far Away in Time Parts 1 and 2, wherein the reader meets Mr Silverfrost, 'the old man with the very white hair and the strange squint'. Memories blur the present; is he really who Angie remembers? Why has Carrie got no recollection of him? What is the liquid in the phial that seems to have such magical properties? When she inadvertently prevents a crime, Angie finds herself a helpless passenger in a confusing cycle of events. I wonder if there might be a Part 3 in Maria's next collection... Echoes of her Dreams is the poignant tale of Charlene, a selfless mother who puts her own life on hold in order to help others. She dreams of experiencing more of the big wide world, but finds her true calling is closer to home. Can the dead contact the living from beyond the grave? In A Sign, this longstanding riddle is pondered in a sensitive way. Grace makes a discovery in her new house, which unlocks events from the past, setting a series of events in motion which lead ultimately to some kind of redemption. Following on, Tragedy of Love is powerfully concise. Philip delays making his move with Selene, with tragic consequences; this tale makes the reader feel there's no time like the present. The Beach is next, and would not be out of place in an anthology of strange tales. Mike and Toyah have enjoyed a holiday by the sea. Afterwards, Mike has a vivid nightmare which comes back to haunt him from from an unexpected source. Savva's description of panic in the surf is hard-hitting, conjuring a strong image which will stay with me for some time. Finally, Betrayal tells the story of a complex set of circumstances combining to make Desiree realise the truth behind her family's relationship. Does she know the real reason behind her father and stepmother's change of heart towards her? Or will it be too late for any kind of resolution? These are intelligent, well-written stories about real people confronting real issues, confronting the past and looking to the future; and, as ever, I look forward very much to Maria Savva's next collection.
