3.0 su 5 stelle Great guitar, not great vocals. 20 febbraio 2013

The first time I heard Primal Rock Rebellion’s Awoken Broken my reaction was disappointment. After giving it some time and an honest chance, I’ve decided it’s not as bad as I initially thought. Adrian Smith’s guitar work is fantastic. This album is an excellent showcase of his soaring guitar abilities and creativity, much of which does not fall within the scope or vision of Iron Maiden. He experiments with many different guitar tones and down tunings among other things that Iron Maiden fans probably haven’t heard Smith do. The guitar solos alone are worth the price of admission, and the guitar riffs are an engaging and resounding triumph for the world of modern heavy metal. Smith demonstrates that he has the chops to stand alone and he holds his ground like a champion. Stand-out tracks include Bright as a Fire and White Sheet Robes.

Smith’s backing vocals are far better than Mikee Goodman’s howling, scraping, wildcat bellows, which take up far too much space on this album. Smith could have easily sung all the vocals on this album and made this a five star, 10/10 project. Lest you think otherwise, I never expected this album to sound like Iron Maiden, and I certainly didn’t expect the vocals to sound like Bruce Dickinson, but I had hoped they would be at least listenable to an avid metal-listener. I wouldn’t have minded if it had even been a death metal growl, but it wasn’t. And to be fair, Goodman sounds fine for the most part when his voice isn’t leaping and diving like a madman, reminiscent at times of nothing if not Korn’s Freak On A Leash. (A good example of this can be found within the first 00:30 of No Place Like Home, if you wish to listen no further.) I guess the word “primal” should have been a giveaway, but I didn’t think that meant the vocals would be knuckle-draggingly Neanderthal primal.

Overall it’s not a terrible album. Smith’s guitar work is transcendent, and I think it’s a great tragedy that it will largely be overlooked by the music world and even the metal world. But the greater tragedy is that Goodman’s bizarre whining and maniacal shrieking befouled Smith’s guitar genius. If you like Goodman’s voice, or at least don’t mind it, then I highly recommend this album.

As a longtime Maiden fan, liking both their old and new material, I knew from the song previews that this was nothing like Maiden. And for me, that's not a bad thing. For the vocals - definitely not "Lord Bruce" but also not as extreme as Black Metal. I like both styles, and so I found the dynamic style range of the singer Mikee Goodman enjoyable. He goes easily from traditional to extreme styles, and there is even a spoken word number...I actually like the singing. But the real reason I bought this was to hear what Adrian Smith had to say outside of his day job. I was pleased to hear a diverse selection of songs. Most are riff heavy and hard, with an industrial feel, but there are also some toned down melodic numbers as well. Mikee adds to this by adjusting his style within the songs to complement what the guitar is doing. I'm reminded at points of Black Album Metallica, Alice in Chains, and even Guns and Roses at points. That's just for reference, though, the sound is original and unique, and the range of vocals and song styles all are cohesive and the songs sound like they belong together. For example, Bright as a Fire has an intro that would fit in on Somewhere in Time, but quickly leads to driving, crunching, riffs, and this is broken by a lighter sung chorus. Awoken Broken immediately starts with a charging riff and races along, but in a different sound than Bright as a Fire. Finally, Mirror and the Moon is much different than No Place like Home (it's not technically acoustic, but you get the idea) but it somehow fits in with all the rest. After hearing the "heavy side" of Adrian, I really wish he could work some of this into the next Maiden album. Or, just put out another Primal Rock Rebellion record! If you are a hard rock fan, I would definitely recommend giving it a chance.

Well worth the purchase, great metal album. It's worth it alone for White Sheet Robes. Huge Iron Maiden fan (who isn't right?), this is totally different in all the right ways. The singer (Mikee Goodman) is very unusual. His stlye varies significantly throughout the album. I think he's really good. One reviewer referred to him as a death metal growler, that's not even remotely true. This guy's a great singer, VERY unique style(s). Adrian kicks ass all over the place. You hear him play styles you never hear in Maiden. I really hope some of his work here spills back into Maiden's next album. Adrian Smith Unleashed!

I've always been an Iron Maiden fan, and when I heard that Steve Harris was doing a solo side project, I checked out a couple tracks, and was not really that impressed with it. I decided to give "Awoken Broken" (featuring Maiden's Adrian Smith, for those who don't know), and it is a far better and more rocking effort. It's a bit strange in some spots, but that's okay. It has enough good stuff on it to overlook the weird moments.

I must admit that I purchased this CD initially because I always support anything that Iron Maiden and the band does... that being said... I was totally not expecting the music on this cd. Very modern metal with a tinge of old school. The vocals are heavy but listenable... the music is amazing... this is HEAVY METAL...at its coolest...dark...it takes you to a place and keeps you there for the entire cd.
The production was amazing also...
Up the Irons!
